What was the official explanation for Georgie’s death?

Was it an unsolved murder, animal attack or disappearance?

disappearance I would assume, but lots of kids had disappeared from this tiny town over the years and it seemed to be acceptable which was always weird to me..

I wasn’t sure because in the novel his body was left on road in the gutter and if recall correctly they thought it was an animal attack.

The 1990 miniseries had the authorities finding what was left of Georgie's body and so there could be a burial, and a chance for Bill to mourn and move on.

The 2017 movie had Georgie down as missing, meaning that Bill and his family were suffering, not knowing whether or not their loved one was alive or dead. It was only after the Losers defeated Pennywise in the sewer and Bill found Georgie's yellow jacket that he was finally able to accept his death, surrounded by his friends.

I much prefer the 2017 movie's way of doing things here.
