Will we ever again see a good Carrey movie ?

I used to like Jim Carrey a lot, back in the day he was the king of comedy with Dumb and Dumber, Cable Guy (my favourite) The Mask, Ace Ventura, but in the last ten years he have to my opinion gone on auto pilot, all his last 6 - 8 movies have been ordinay stuff, so do anyone have a theory about him and why he is just a shadow of himself ?

I think part of it is just that his schtick has gotten old. Also he probably doesn't feel comfortable throwing himself into goofball parts like he used to.. because he's older and it feels pathetic to keep acting like you're 12.. but I agree.. either dive into that *beep* full-throttle or don't do it.

What are you talking about ?

the number 23, Yes man and A christmas carol were all very good films and i enjoyed all of them.

i particularly enjoyed Yes man, and i thought it was a great film which is very similar to his older movies. very funny and with a cute plot.

I don't think he lost his touch at all, and i respect him for amking kids' movies as well, and not letting his ego take the better of him.

Fun with Dick and Jane was actually pretty underrated. I think that's probably his best movie since Me, Myself, and Irene. It is a shame though how much he's fallen since the 90s.

I'm guessing OP has not seen I Love You Phillip Morris?

I have gone away to come back. For the ones I left behind. For the ones who cannot out.

I know...What are you doing Jim?? Surely you can do better than this..Not just better comedy but you're brilliant in your serious roles when you want to be.

Yes. You will see a good Jim Carrey movie every time you watch Ace Ventura, Ace Ventura 2, or Liar, Liar.

Otherwise, probably not.

I think pretty much anything else he has done movie-wise, has been either too non-funny crazy (Cable Guy, Me, Myself and Irene), too dumb (I don't have to name this movie, do I?), too mediocre (Bruce Almighty, The Mask), or too serious and boring (The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Number 23).

But hey, at least he made three good ones! That's more than can be said about a lot of high-profile actors, when you really think about it.

The man has never made a bad movie.
Everything he has chosen has been good and when you consider that he must have had a ton of scripts thrown his way over the last 20 odd years, he has clearly picked carefully and restricted himself from taking whatever comes along... *cough* Robert De Niro *cough*
He has never done anything 'ordinary' and even the more 'mediocre' movies have been elevated by his performance.
He is STILL incredibly funny and a very sharp comic talent - just because you're not seeing him make Ace Ventura style movies anymore, that doesn't mean he's 'a shadow of himself'.
One of the major issues is the fact that Hollywood no longer produces movies as innovative and entertaining as The Mask or or Dumb and Dumber. Hollywood has become stale, predictable and dull - a far cry from the heyday of the 80s and 90s.
And while we're on the Popper's Penguins board, I think it's a delightful and beautiful film full of warmth and heart.

Yes, OP. I have a theory. It’s that he ROCKED on the TV series, In Living Color, and then sold out faster than a hooker at a Shriner’s convention. Then, when he got older and tired, he tried to make Family films and become the white Eddy Murphy. None of his films stands the test of time. The Mask was okay for its time (BTW, the correct phrase is “back in the old days,” which makes actual sense, unlike the ghetto abridgment, “back in the day,” which makes no sense), but its leads are not esteemed today. The rest of Jim’s body of work is Nouveau Fratboy, the kind of schlock that boys who drink beer and laugh “Yuk-yuk-yuk” think is funny. Three Stooges funny. Flintstones funny.

Disposable funny.

No; nor have we seen any good ones in the past? “Smokin’”? Don’t think so.
