Holly's motive (includes spoilers)

Here's a plot element I'm still struggling with (from the synopsis):

"She reveals that she and her husband had been religious people .. until their son died of cancer at a young age. Holly and her husband decided to make a war on God by making children disappear without a trace".

Really? I find it unconvincing that being grief-stricken about the son's death she (and her now estranged/dead husband) decided to abduct/drug/brainwash/kill children on that basis. It's a major WTF plot hole. Any thoughts on this?

I thought her stated "reason" was to make other parents lose their faith. She told Keller that outside when he was in, or about to get in, the car. Given that Holly and her husband were very religious, my take was that after losing their faith and feeling betrayed by God (a very shallow faith understanding of faith it must have been!) when their child died, the idea of spreading a lack of faith to do battle with God seems understandable, at least from a sociopathic point of view.
