Why do people blame Kevin Smith?

Sure, this film isn't the greatest. But the fault doesn't lie with him. He only directed the movie and didn't write it. I think had he written the film it would've been 10x better than it turned out.

Lmfao! And because he flinched.

reply

Because he is the director. Directors take all the credit when a film is good and likewise they also get the blame when the film fails. Smith approved of the script. This wasn't a contract abligation.

reply

Because he's an ass that gets easily hurt. Look up the podcast where Adam Corolla brings Smith on because a project they wanted to do fell apart due to Smith being butthurt over communication.

The studio made a big mistake in casting Bruce Willis for this anyway. This role just doesn't fit him at all.

he specifically chose the script and signed off on the finished product. at that time also turned up everywhere, telling people how satisfied he is with the film.

reply

He does not deserve the blame. Willis does. Sorry, but in a studio film where it is basically "insert director" the success or failure of the movie is much more about the star than the director. The average person couldn't tell you directed Die Hard or many of Willis's other action movies, but they like or dislike those movies because of Willis.

yeah, it wasn't shot well, was not really acted well, but it was so badly written that it didn't have a chance of being anything but terrible

Knowing how Smith his now, I 100% blame him for this film being so terrible. Yeah the script was bad, but Smith's direction for this is equally has bad too. I know fans will defend him, but this film really was the first in a huge decline in quality from Smith as it was the first film he did after picking up a heavy pot smoking habit and it shows. I don't blame Bruce for being pissed at him all the time for being unprofessional. Look at every film he's done after this and there is a reason he will probably never direct another major studio movie ever again.
