Well, I think the result is a mixture of the fact that you have "Shakespeare snobs" and teenagers. For "Shakespeare snobs" nothing will beat the original material performed on stage at the Globe theatre in authentic costumes. You have to shrug at that, because you'll never change their minds.
Teenagers, or people with teenage like tastes in film, have a chance of evolving or changing their opinion as they get older. But in the meantime they just take things on face value. And they can't understand the language, then that's that.
I think the film is great. My only complaint is that there weren't more extras and military hardware involved to really make this film really stand out in terms of production values.
I liked the costumes, I liked the actors, I liked the contemporary setting. The only thing I didn't like was that some of the dialog and scenes were cut to make it more filmmable.
Just because other people don't like it and that it didn't make it in the popularity contest, does not detract from its excellence.
