I was shocked to see the 6.1 rating.

Considering the rave reviews the film has from critics, a pitiful score like this is surprising. It wasn't the most broad movie, but it was an interesting experiment in film making.

Honestly, I would have been surprised to see it have anything less than 7.0, but a 6.1 is just plain astonishing.

Oh my goodness, he's like the Abed of racism.

you are Right op, I am also truly flabbergasted after watching this great movie being rated 6.1 Are you kidding me!? I was expecting no less than 7.0

reply

Yes, unfortunately it kept going down since the voting started. Makes me think that some people who haven't even seen the film vote on it with an extremely low score.

Contrast it with a 7.9 meta critic.

I guess the fan boys came to eventually realise that it wasn't directed by Michael Bay and burnt it accordingly.

I think it must be mainly people who wouldn't go to see Shakespeare on stage hoping for something easier to understand. Especially given that at least some reviewers seemed to want it in pseudo- American.
I generally prefer it in the appropriate time but don't think Roman clothing from 1500 years ago would look right on screen.
This setting highlighted the conflict of a career soldier who is encouraged to become z politicians even tho he is entirely unsuited for it. This is a situation we have seen many times in Arab spring, European and many other conflicts, and the changeable nature of the voters who worship a leader one moment and bay for his blood the next

Well, I think the result is a mixture of the fact that you have "Shakespeare snobs" and teenagers. For "Shakespeare snobs" nothing will beat the original material performed on stage at the Globe theatre in authentic costumes. You have to shrug at that, because you'll never change their minds.

Teenagers, or people with teenage like tastes in film, have a chance of evolving or changing their opinion as they get older. But in the meantime they just take things on face value. And they can't understand the language, then that's that.

I think the film is great. My only complaint is that there weren't more extras and military hardware involved to really make this film really stand out in terms of production values.

I liked the costumes, I liked the actors, I liked the contemporary setting. The only thing I didn't like was that some of the dialog and scenes were cut to make it more filmmable.

Just because other people don't like it and that it didn't make it in the popularity contest, does not detract from its excellence.

Agree, I gave it a 7 and I'm usually 1-2 points below the IMDB average. I think it has to do with the decision to retain much of the original text, which can be difficult to follow at times. I needed subtitles to keep up. I think they should have done more to make the dialogue palatable for modern audiences. Still, it was a solid film overall.
