Decent movie pretty much ruined by no real payoff.
Yes, there were tons of holes and places where you had to suspend your disbelief: E.g. I don't for a second believe that a piece of technology that advanced didn't come with the ability to, I don't know, say, RE-HIBERNATE people! Or provide MORE THAN ONE of those doohickies that could re-hiberrnate someone. Or have some kind of plan to wake up crew members when the ship's system basically starts down a self-destruct path -- like, WTF? Really? Just gonna let everyone blow up???
But, yeah, the thing that really peeved me was the ending -- or LACK of an ending, I should say. I mean, after all that REALLY good buildup -- and to be clear, I really enjoyed the 2 main characters and their dynamics -- there was simply no ultimate payoff. Just a cheap 10 second voiceover while Andy Garcia looks on in disbelief at some plants and trees (which we barely got a good glimpse of).
There should've been a montage... or kids... or something. They should've let the audience see the world the 2 of them created together. And really, if there were no kids, Lawrence and Pratt didn't live the full 88 years, so that ship was left unattended for probably a couple of decades. So how were those animals alive, and that little oasis looking so idyllic, and ... Oh whatever. The numbers just don't add up.
Ok, enough semi-ranting.
