What do non Indians think of Amitabh Bachchan - Meyer Wolfsheim

Being an Indian, having grown up on his movies, I regard Amitabh Bachchan as the greatest actor and superstar ever. Think of him as the Harrison Ford or Al Pacino or Clint Eastwood of India. Somebody who has delivered great performances and managed to remain a huge superstar for 40 years.

Am very curious to know what the Non-Indian audience thought of him?

Good job in small role. Not being familiar with a lot of Indian films, could you recommend something he was in?

Deewaar (1975) is my favorite film of his. He has done a lot but that's where I recommend a non-Bollywood movie watcher to start.

Oh, please. That crappy movie 'Paa' is a complete copy of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Bollywood movies sicken me now. The older movies were better, but now I hate it.

I would recommend 'Zanjeer' and 'Namak Haraam'

As a non-Indian, I'd say Kabhi Kabhie is a good place to start.

He's quite creepy in Gatsby, but I felt that it was quite awesome. It was so cool having him there!

No, father, the moon's reaching for me!

amitabh in india ====10 times brando---- and that is an understatement.

He is the king of indian cinema( method and otherwise both tragedy and comedy with equal ease!).
amitabh is known all around the world. his movies are watched all around asia, africa, middel east, russian bet, carebbean and south america. He did not try hollywood as he rejected indians being type cast back in those days( you know what i am saying). His hands were always full( indians movies are very tiring with all the work lead has to do and those dances).

He has been voted as the greatest actor of the century in the british tabloid( will give a link)

He has been a superstar for more than 4 decades now. The uprising of home media has bought in massive wealth for amitabh these days and made his job that much harder for him to try hollywood block busters( he can easily get 100 mil of his own for hollywood block busters). He hosts inidan millionaire show. Also slew of ads for big companies. last year the man drew cool 50 mil revenue away from movies( at the age of 72!). Tells you the pedigree of the man.

watch his movies sholay, jangeer, deewar, don, satte pe satta, gambler, namak halal, naseeb, suhaaj, lawaris, muqadar ka sikandar! There are many many block buster movies!

check him out right on imdb.

Man, I thought he was the perfect choice for the part. He looked like a Wolf to me, like he would just as soon eat you alive as shake your hand. There was a ruthless danger behind that wolf-like smile. Totally believable and now I couldn't see anyone else playing the part. Kudos to Amitabh on playing the small part very well.

He has a rich voice that reminded me of John Rhys-Davies and he had that Alpha quality where you can tell off the bat that he's in control and one to always mind and respect, it's very difficult for many actors to pull off that impression(it took Buschemi two seasons in Boardwalk Empire) but he managed too smoothly in short amount of time which is a feat.

Amitabh played a "bad guy" well - he "kinda" scared me - but i'm sure he's played some "nice/good guy" roles, since he is 70 after all

Well, truth be told, Luhrmann is a self-proclaimed Bollywood admirer and that is the reason an Indian actor was cast. Otherwise it is stupid to cast a South-Asian as a Jew. Also, he was not good as we would like a Fitzgerald character to be.

well i am an Indian and to me he is one of the greatest actors in the world... I'd recommend Agneepath to all Non- Indian film buffs. Its a take on the Al Pacino classic Scarface ... Must watch..

yes, there are lot of jews in asia. parsis from india are jewish background. A mixture of hindu and jews! lot of jews also in bombay area( wherever portugals ruled india) like goa.
so a south asian can be a bonafide jew!

You seriously need to eject that Mahaan dvd and watch other movies.

A good enough actor for the role he was playing.

I knew who he was and what his status was, but I haven't seen any of his movies so I was curious to see how this mega-star, number 1 or 2 most famous man in India (maybe Shah Rukh Khan also), would shape up in a non-Bollywood film, where the rules are slightly different. I have to say I think it was a pretty perfect piece of casting; Bachchan oozed class, menace, charm and money all at once, he only had five minutes or so, but he definitely got the most out of it. There was something irresistible about him, in spite of how dangerous he seemed to be, perhaps this is a feature of the Bachchan style?

reply

He was good...but not outstanding or anything.

It was quite a small role so its not like they gave him much opportunity to show his range.

I'm sure he's a great actor, but he was wrong for the part. It may not have been his fault, but the way that the script was written and directed. The luncheon scene was totally botched and we don't learn crucial information about Wolfsheim or about his relationships with Gatsby.

He didn't look like Wolfsheim and he didn't get the accent right. Wolfsheim had a pronounced Yiddish accent, which Fitzgerald parodied in the book. Whatever accent Bachchan used, it certainly wasn't Lower East Side New York Yiddish.
