Why cast Oprah?

I think Oprah has no business anywhere else than in her own show, which only losers watch.

I don't really care much for the Oprah I see in the celebrity news feeds, etc, but I'll admit, she's a damn good actor and she more than held her own in this. She gave an excellent performance.

reply

Quite the dumb post there... She did an excellent job. Did you even watch it?

reply

Damn, you guys are so clearly envious of this woman. Anybody can see that Oprah was phenomenal in this movie. I completely forgot that Gloria was actually Oprah Winfrey and I can't think of any other actress that could have given a better portrayal. I don't know what you guys where looking at but it clearly wasn't her acting. If you're satisfied with your own life then you wouldn't feel so hateful and envious of other people's success.

Why cast Oprah?

Because some people will see it just because she's in it.

The only real insanity to the decision is that by employing Oprah as an actress in the movie, you are essentially making the movie world a place where Oprah Winfrey doesn't exist. In a movie all about the shift in blacks' position in our society, this is a pretty big omission.

I mean Oprah is arguably the biggest African-American success story there is. She came from nothing and has become one of the most powerful women in the country, all through her own hard work. Not to mention that she has made most of the country, spanning all races, fall in love with her. That has done so much to bridge the racial divides. There's little room for racist leanings to take root and grow in non-black households where Mom's favourite show is Oprah.

Not to mention that the climax of the film is Obama's winning the presidancy. Oprah was the wind in his sails to accomplishing that! So it's kind to try to reconcile Oprah as an actress in the movie when she should really have been a presence (perhaps only offsceen) in the movie world as well.

I hate Oprah! Good I aint the only one. I hated watching her fat ass on screen. She is the reason why I havenĀ“t watched the color purple.

reply

Well then you missed out on a great movie(The Color Purple) Dont care much for Oprah the talk show host or self absorbed media peronality, however, she is a gifted actress ..I will give her that.

reply

I think Mo'Nique was originally supposed to play that character, but after her post-Oscar "unpleasantness," (you can google all that) it was taken away from her and given to Oprah.

reply

She's an Oscar nominated actress from years ago. It's actually one of her true talents, besides her former talk-show business successes.

Most people love her or hate her as a person/celebrity...but as an actual actress, she is exceptional in her roles. I think you will be impressed.
