Anti shark repelant

Someone should invent one.... something that if you fall in the water can be used as a weapon against the shark or some sonar that will repell the sharks.

Agreed.

Batman has

It's a spray

everyone likes trout

And it only works on robotic sharks that blow up.

I'm sure I read somewhere that such things do exist, and are being experimented with. Can't remember where I read it but it was something about the fact that sharks don't like rotting flesh, so people were trying to develop little 'cakes' that smelled like rotting flesh, which you could tie to the ankle of your wet suit and release them if a shark appeared.

It certainly has worked against bear attacks, the spray idea. So it could be a good one.

A small nuclear device would do the trick.

I saw something on TV years ago like this if not this http://sharkshield.com/

It creates an electric field the sharks don't like, pretty good idea.

reply

That's solid creativity but you may also end up just annoying the shark? I would much rather take a sound recording of dolphin clicks and use that to scare off sharks. Or maybe a waterproof poster of Chuck Norris ;-)

reply

You realise that sharks eat dolphins right? Dolphin clicks may end up with more of a dinner bell sound to it ;)

reply

No, dolphins attack sharks by ramming their gill covers at high speed. Dolphins are also very strong swimmers, and can get away from most sharks. Sharks do not prey on dolphins as a rule.

There's a mystery docu sometime back.

Scientists were baffled why an island was void of great whites esp when its the peak season. Turned out that killer whales were hunting them and that the other great whites fled, because they detected the presence of other great white blood in the water.

reply

Yes, but if you invent an item that will repel sharks then their won't be any more shark movies:-)

reply

There is, its still in trials but basically it's decomposing shark in a canister. Basically they take a bunch of this rotting shark flesh, put it in this can, seal it and basically throw it in the water and it'll clear the sharks out of the immediate area. It has some special cap when submerged it sort of explodes and fizzes like crazy and chums up the water with rotten shark. Seen it on shark week about 2 years ago. So basically, go fishing, catch a shark, let it rot it in your backyard, put it in a bag, go out in the ocean and start chumming up the water. You'll be safe to swim!

Well no,

you just simply have to not panic and keep an eye on them

Sharks should be respected as you after all in their territory

I recommend a documentary called "Sharkwater" truly amazing

Great Whites rarely attack and 90% of cases are people stereotyping sharks =/

In terms of "a weapon" you would only have to punch a shark on the nose for it to be extremely confused or if its small enough get it onto its back so it falls into a trance-like state

YES! I agree with this guy.
You should always be aware about shark zones, do not panic (thrashing around will definitely make the shark be more aware of you), punch the shark if it gets close enough.

You must keep in mind that if you're a surfer, your board actually represent a similar shape of a seal while you're on it. Always try to be around friends or other surfers so in case of a shark attack, they can quickly assist you as you should to them.
