Andrea Yates - heartbreaking!

Heartbreaking and so preventable. Poor family.

Question for her husband: "What part of 'DO NOT leave her alone with the children!' did you fail to understand?"

reply

I can't feel any hate for that woman.

reply

I feel hate for what she did, but I don't have any hate for her.

She was the victim of a negligent husband and a warped world view. Too bad her children paid the price.

Yes, Andrea wanted to save her children from the devil. Even from a sane, Biblical Christian standpoint, that's warped, but it's easy to see she was messed up. As well as well as she was able to think and make decisions, she thought she was being a loving, parent to spare them from a worse fate.

I'm glad you all see that and don't hate her or curse her. Really, hating and cursing the worst scum who kill does nothing either, but they are more understandable to feel that way toward then someone like Yates. So my only question is...

Why don't people see the Chris Benoit case the same way? He was paranoid for a while before the murder-suicide and thought someone was following him. His mind was messed up from repeated concussions and trauma. It's easy to see that he probably wanted to save himself and his family from whatever crueler fate he thought would happen at the hands of whoever he thought was following him. But he has always been hated and cursed by many since the incident. I have the feeling that at least one reason is that he didn't get to stand trial for the other' murders. Yates did get dealt with.

If there is one thing Yates and Benoit should teach us, anyone in their exact circumstances would probably do what they did too. It could be your favorite celebrity, your wife, your dad... or you! I wouldn't want to be hated and cursed for doing something I had no control over.

Then there is the late pro wrestler Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, who is accused of murdering his girlfriend, but when they tried to get him to stand trial the last time, he was deemed unable to and there is no report that says he was even put under house arrest before he died. There is evidence that he killed her, but evidence has pointed the wrong way in many cases before and by all accounts, Snuka was a nice, gentle guy. But if he did it, he was drugged up and/or drunk and like in the famous novel Of mice and Men, the big, strong guy most likely got carried away and didn't know what he was doing until it was too late. Anyone one else in his circumstances would have likely done the same thing.

I don't think it's that crazy. My parents spoke of the Devil and his power, but they never tried to drown me.

I'd hate her if she wasn't crazy. I view her as a victim. Her husband was worthless and her church screwed her. She was a victim just like her kids. I don't think she should ever get out, but she belongs in a hospital setting.

It's interesting how different situations change our viewpoint of things.

Mrs. Yates (Andrea's mother in law) was my favorite teacher in high school, here in Nashville. She was such a warn and great person. And an excellent teacher!!
Mrs. Yates was so proud of those kids and of her son and Andrea. She bragged on them all the time.
She had been there visiting (in my opinion, keeping an eye on Andrea, while Russell worked). She had just left for the airport, to head home, when this tragedy occurred.
Losing her beloved grandchildren about killed this woman!!
I am not sure why Russell didn't take this more serious and do more to prevent. But I do know he came from a wonderful and caring family. So just don't see him being this completely horrible and uncaring man. Think he just had a huge lapse in judgement and is still paying deadly for it
FYI, Russell was a bit of a hometown success story in Nashville in the 80's. He was valedictorian of his class and had like a 4.3 GPA. He lettered in many sports, including star player on his football team. He was definitely a who is who among young people at that time.
Nobody was surprised with the success he had found as an adult. Just seemed anything he tried, he always succeeded. Huge Over Achiever!!
I have always wondered if truly accepting Andrea's mental illness, if that somehow equated failure to him. And that was not something he was familiar with.

I read a book about her and it brought me to tears!
