She played the most sociable, pragmatic, non-cynical monster you'd ever want to meet. It really got her recognized in Hollywood.šŸ

Perfect description, man.

Janine came across as a kind of lion tamer. With her her sons and their criminal friends as the lions/animals.

But I guess that was the point.

No two persons ever watch the same movie.

Agreed! It was so restrained.
She could've easily been this angry, yelling woman keeping her sons in check.

But wow, she was so contained, killing them with kindness but every word she spoke, you could feel the ferocity.

The way she looked at the people she didn't like made me feel chills, it was brilliant

She's the main reason for watching, I'm was so impressed with her ability to make that role she played real life for me. Love her!

I've heard the portrayal of her character in the Amer series of the same name is very different. People who've seen the film are not all happy with it,,Ellen Barkin is very good, but the characters across the board, it seems are quite different??
I haven't seen either,...but,I really want to see this film. I've been reading about it and saw it is a successful series on TV.

I'm not sure which to see first now..lol..both have received great reviews, but those who've seen the movie first are less happy with the series,,not unusual I guess.

She was excellent -- a largely quiet, background performance until near the end where the true nature of her character came to the fore.
