What was up with the dick?

Seriously?

reply

I just watched this yesterday. What scene had a penis? I saw some quick boob shots, but recall no wangus.

reply

Commentary says that the penis was shown because of all the female nudity. So they basically thought: 'look at all these tits; lets add a dick to balance things out.'

Seeing nudity in Battlestar Galactica was kinda odd though. You go through the miniseries, four seasons and a movie (Razor) without seeing any nudity. Then there's that. It didn't other me though; it was just a little odd.

This is my signature.

You know what Rob-949? You can take that bad attitude of yours and send it back to Caprica (or the original torched earth, for that matter). All of us are on this thread because we noticed something different in THE PLAN and want to discuss it in an organized, timely and professional manner. That scene was more than a fraction of a second and you KNOW IT! But no - you come on here, insult us, make false accusations about the scene in question and clearly have nothing positive to add to this discussion.

Look, I'm sorry. I know I just came on a little strong there. I'm just sort of passionate about this subject and don't like it when people bring their negativity into this. I'm sure you're a cool guy Rob and I'd be down to grab a beer or something with you sometime soon. We cool?

reply

Sorry to be facetious, but "what dick"? I'm gay, I *look* for dick and I didn't see it.

Mind you, I was busy looking for a plot...

yep, it's a cheap shot, but still worth taking ;)

thats kind of unfair, tits arent genitals, a penis is, they should have zoomed in on a fvckin vag too :D

penis bias >.<

reply

I agree peikloof...I hate it when these moron feminists try to compare showing a penis to showing breasts and claim its about "equality". Penises are genital nudity while breasts are only non-genital nudity. If they are going to show penises then they should also show vaginas. Let's learn to compare apples to apples people; only full female genital nudity (labia and anus) is equivelant to full male genital nudity (penis and scrotum).

reply

To make really bad for the actor with the dick, it was uncredited...

that had to hurt..

reply

Inexcusable.

reply

The dick was obviously a cylon.

reply

To make really bad for the actor with the dick, it was uncredited...
But what would they have credited him as? "Man with penis"?

.

reply

Well, it would seem to describe his part in the movie without the possibility of him being mistaken for someone else.

I suppose, if he was/is unhappy with his penis, he might be happy to not be credited, I know there is a need for hand models and finger models. Not sure of the demand for penis models. Did the bare breasted bar tender get credited? This may be a conspiracy for of all the breasts seen, hers were the best proportioned that I noticed....

But then this is just me.

I wonder how penis man auditioned for the part and how it will show up in his resume. So much to ponder.

You have no idea how hard I laughed when I just read that.

The scene is not obvious and is shown for about 1 second. Get the frak over it. You do know that this is rated 18+ right?

reply

So...any updates? How's everyone doing?

reply

Well, it was just announced that "The Dick" is getting it's own spinoff show!

reply

I find this thread hilarious. There was plenty of topless women scenes, and female ass on the screen yet, everyone bugs out over a penis. Men hardly ever show their cocks on screen and it's to actually see a man show full frontal for a change. I didn't see a point to ANY nudity in the film however, but hey, I'm sure they did it because they could.

reply

I don't think anyone is really bugging out over it. It's just weird to see a random penis so deliberately focused on that way. This topic probably wouldn't have existed if it would have just been a peripheral shot, but the camera deliberately panned down and then zoomed in on it, as if to emphasize it. It would have been just as weird to see the camera zoom in on one of the women's crotches that way.

knightleyromance, you are another typical fool using the INCORRECT feminist argument that "they show tits, why not dicks?". The difference is that the T &A of the women is only NON-GENITAL nudity, not genital nudity. Non-genital nudity is far less explicit and therefore less offensive to most people.

Yes, movies often show female non-genital nudity but they ALSO show male non-genital nudity (ass), and they usually only get a PG-13 rating when they show a man's ass but an "R" rating when they show a woman's ass or boobs. They could have shown the women's boobs and the men's bare asses and nobody would have complained.

Non-genital nudity of men is ALREADY being shown just as often as non-genital female nudity. So things were already fair.... even though the stupid feminazis complained about it using incorrect and illogical arguments, like they always do. Feminists are incapable of making accurate comparisons and comparing apples to apples. (every extra gram of estrogen a person has reduces their I.Q. by 5 points)

But recently movies started showing male full genital nudity (penis and scrotum) but we still never get to see full female genital nudity ( vagina or anus). Dicks have been shown....when are we going to start seeing the labia on cable TV series and in mainstream movies? Fair is fair. Its time for some REAL equality in the nudity department. Women should have their genitalia on display too. (but of course then all the crybaby feminists will whine and complain and call it "degrading" or "exploitative". You want to hear complaints about nudity knightleyromance? Then have a mainstream film show a close-up of a woman's labia and watch all the bitch women complain about it. Its the crybaby feminists who complain the loudest about nudity. They can't bear to look at a nude woman; feminists are misogynists!)

reply

When I first watched that scene, I didn't even notice. I actually had to watch it again at half-speed to even see it, after having read about it online. (Why I did that, I'm not sure.)

My reaction was basically "It's about time." For a show with so much violence (murder, genocide, rape, etc), and so much sex (which by comparison is much more pleasant to watch), I thought it wholly appropriate that they finally got some genuine nudity up on the screen. It was nonsexual, and completely fit with the naturalistic style of the show.

I was only surprised there wasn't more.

reply

This is just typical american.. Here in Europe this is completely normal and no one here is bothered by male nudity.. Are americans really that insecure about themselves that they cannot handle some male nudity? Why is it okay to show a nude female but not a nude male?

tomas. i created a thread about a dick. what in that made you think I was insecure about dicks?

Some human beings aren't neurotic and afraid of the genitalia sported by 50% of the population. In fact, one of the main points of showing that scene, with a multi-gender open showering area, was to show a difference between your life experience and the experience a person onboard the Galactica. Unlike you, they've grown up. They are emotionally more mature than a 3 year old and have overcome their interest, positive or negative, with regards to genitalia. They realize that the genitals are simply a part of a human body, no more special than a hand or foot. It is tremendously immature and really quite neurotic to expect all depictions of human beings to be of bizarrely mutilated creatures with no genitalia.

It's not unusual that you find yourself afraid of penises given the society you grew up in (assuming any modern western society), but really you should learn at least to be ashamed of your fear. It's ignorant and makes you look as intellectually backward as racists and homophobes. There are over 3.25 BILLION penises on the earth right now. You should really learn to deal with them.

reply

Thank you Ota for the time you put into that post. It really was a gamechanger for me. I now know what a backwards life I've been living. I guess I never did the math on how much genetalia there was in the world. Thank you for doing that math for me. I now see the wrong in my ways and want to change. Can you help me change? Please tell me where this Utopia is that you grew up in that instilled in you such a respect for genitalia. I now realize that without this penis respect that you have, I'll always be less of a man than you.

Please get back to me soon Ota and continue to educate me and better my soul. There are 3.25 billion penises you say, so does that also apply to Vagina's? I'd appreciate it if you could do that math as well, just so I know.

With love...

I love this thread! You think 'Man with penis' (or Eddie Olmos for that matter) has realized what intense, heated discussions his superb body acting has spawned?

'Man with penis' for president!

reply

I just read this whole thread and I think I pissed myself crying out loud of laughter! Especially narrds's comments!

reply

omflol

This thread is gold.

I didn't notice the penis, but I do find it strange that they decided to put one in...just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. How did it add to the story? Did it help create the atmosphere? What was the purpose of the zoom?

I have no problem with nudity AT ALL. I think nudity should be allowed in pg-13, and violence should be the thing that's reduced (in pg-13 anyway)

It's not a fear otaku, it's just....why? What is the purpose? If they zoomed in on a cats *beep* would you still be all 'grow up you three year olds'

reply

If nothing else, it indicated that he was a human being. If you came across a society that obsessively and neurotically hid their noses, and any time one was shown in a film a chorus of "What did it add? Why was it necessary?" what would you think about those people? That is what I think about making a big deal out of simple body parts. We've even got a fairly common occurrence of having animated "people" being drawn as unclothed, but neutered. We make dolls that are normally human in every detail... except they are freakishly mutilated when it comes to genitals. Just because it is commonplace does not mean that it is not neurotic. Prior societies had problems with them like accepting infanticide and believing that their leaders led by divine right. One of the problems of our society is that we imagine that genitals are somehow special and different from other body parts, even though there is no objective basis for this and this kind of thinking causes people massive amounts of undue stress.

Especially in a work that deals with the fundamental nature of being human, leaving out genitals out of some societal propriety is a direct violation of the artistic point of the thing. It would just be another thing standing between the viewer and identification with the character.

reply

Thanks Ota.

But I still think we've only skimmed the surface of this post. We've talked about the dick, we've talked about the lack of vagina's onscreen, we've talked about the dangers of society ignoring their genitals - but I think we need to go deeper...

So, as a jumping off point, what do we think Olmos meant to express when he put the dick in the script?

reply

I thought I had covered that... it was a sign of his humanity. If you don't have genitals, then at best you are a mutilated human, more likely not human at all.

reply

Good point. When I watched the four seasons of the show, I had trouble connecting with any of the emotions they were attempting to convey because I couldn't tell if any of the men had penises or if the women had vaginas. However, when I saw the nudity in The Plan, I finally was able to identify with humanity's struggle to survive. Before that point, all I saw were ships full of mutilated objects that may or may not be robots. I didn't understand why their survival mattered since it wasn't confirmed whether or not they actually had genitalia.

For a time, I was able to identify with Helo because he clearly had a penis, otherwise how else would he have fathered a child? But then when I realized that cylons could procreate, that made my world crash down because having genitals no longer defined someone as being human. How then can we know whether a genital is truly a human genital or a robot genital?

Now when I walk down the sidewalk, I often wonder if I'm the only human in society because everyone else covers up their genitalia. It makes me wonder what horrific experiences they had to make them so mutilated that they feel the need to cover up. Then I ponder if in fact they aren't mutilated at all, but really just robots posing as humans. I have to fight the urge to rip their pants off just to know if they are truly human. But then I remember, even if I discover that they have genitalia, can I be sure they are human? Couldn't they just be an anatomically-correct humanoid robot?

So many questions....so few answers. This is truly what makes BSG so great.

-The Galactica's crew is made up of both men and women.

-Living space is very limited, so there isn't much privacy except for important people.

-The society presented in the show is very sexually liberal and egalitarian (even among otherwise conservative people) so sexual segregation based on modesty is not a priority or even something most of them would care about.

-The human body needs regular hygiene and showers are the most efficient means of accomplishing this. In an overcrowded setting public showers are much more practical than private ones.

-People shower in the nude.

-Men have dicks.

-Said appendage is easily visible when the man is nude, as he is in the shower.

-BG has a tradition of naturalistic portrayals of the character's lives both on and off duty. Several scenes throughout the series have already shown some of the implications of communal life in a crowded setting.
