Cancel Culture in Action...

Historically, what's now called "cancel culture" has been a weapon wielded by conservatives. The movie takes it easy on the main character because what she's alleged to have done is not all that bad, plus she never did it. A more mature story would have involved a real transgression and the problem arises because the response is disproportionate (as in the New York Magazine article "Cancelled at 17," where a drunk boy showed a picture of his naked girlfriend to some guys at a party). But this was a movie intended for the Gossip Girl audience, so I understand it was never striving for nuance.
