Why do films like this lean towards supernatural and nonsensical events?

My first instinct about films like this is to gripe that they're just generic interpersonal dramas that use a science fiction/apocalyptical situation as some kind of background event. The people behind them don't really care about "the event" and its ambiguity and contradictions are a byproduct of the writers making up event-related situations because its convenient to some drama scene.

It's not that I mind the drama per se, a situation like this would have drama tied to it and if everyone was coldly rational it wouldn't be realistic, either.

But can't they at least hire some kind of expert on their purported apocalyptic event so that the events are consistent and within the realm of sort of realistic? I mean not having migrating flamingos or weirdly semi-sentient deer herds.
