Jackie Chan....why... =(

Jackie Chan is my favorite martial arts/action star and i've loved pretty much everything he has ever been in. Something like this movie turns up and you think, WTF.
i can't understand how Jackie Chan could choose to be Dwayne Johnson's replacement for these kind of movies.
It's almost degrading to the viewers to have to watch something like this crap with said "action star" slapped on like a sticker. Almost to the point of exploitative. "oh instead of the rock, lets get a freaking action star to lead the comedy. hmm jackie chan? people will think its funny cuz he cant speak perfect english and he makes funny faces when he fights. PERFECT!"
i liked him alot in The Tuxedo and even his role in the upcoming Karate Kid might be bearable(just for him) but gosh- why, Jackie, why?
ill still see this though.. :-/

I'm a huuuge fan of Jackie but my GOD! He deserves better than this. Either he's not being offered anything good or his agent isn't doing his job.

Who says violence is not the answer?

And to think he went from redeeming himself in 'shinjuku incident' to doing this!
by the way, shinjuku incident was a great jackie chan movie that is not like a jackie chan movie.

come on guys, im as massive a fan of JC's as the next guy but even i can admit he hasnt done anything great since drunken master 2, which was what, 15 years ago now? 1978-1994 he was the king, now he's doing *beep* eddie murphy would pass on. so sad :(

seriously look at all of his films theres tons of junk in there. but, pretty much anything after the 80's (post hong kong?) is crap, but some of them are good fun all the same.

don't get me wrong i think he's a great guy, very funny, very talented. but, i think he just likes to work so he'll take anything. if you look over his films you will see that none of them are rated as high as 8 and only one or two higher than 7. no masterpieces. it is disappointing because he could still do something great. some of his stuff from the 90's is watchable, it's just not very good. he should really go back to his roots of comedy coupled with martial arts like dragons forever or project a.

edit: i just watched the trailer for spy next door and i think i'm going to cry. this just makes me sad.

$$$, a movie in the U.S with a poor showing makes more than a HK movie with a great showing. Don't blame him though, i'm sure viewers get tired of seeing him punch a wall, and shake his hands in pain.

reply

Are you serious? Drunken Master 2 is not even close to being his last great movie. He made plenty of great action movies after that, including the likes of First Strike, Who Am I, Mr Nice Guy, Rush Hour, etc. If you said the first Rush Hour was his last good action movie, then I might agree with you somewhat, but otherwise, no.

"WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM???!!!!!"

reply

I don't think he 'redeemed' himself in Shinjuku Incident. That film was a convoluted mess with too many holes in the story.

As to Jackie's films on the whole, I don't think he's made bad films since Drunken Master 2. The only really bad films have been The Tuxedo, The Medallion and Around the World in 80 Days (though the fight in the village is good and this was a kids film too). The Myth wasn't awful, but it could've been better. All his other movies (regardless of the odd bit of cheese such as New Police Story) have been very well made and still offer great martial arts action.

No other actor at his age has managed such a feat in terms of fight choreography. But I think what we all want is a Hollywood Jackie Chan movie that will blow us away or at least be of a more serious tone and with great action. I don't think its going to happen, namely because studio execs won't let this happen (that's their own short-sightedness). Chan has admitted that his US movies tend to fund his HK ones anyway.

But yes, The Forbidden Kingdom was a missed/wasted opportunity

reply

You are right. Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights were great and the Rush Hour films were entertaining, except maybe for the last one.

Let's face it, plenty of stars like Steve Martin take on crap films for money. And really, what's wrong with that? The Spy Next Door is clearly targeted at children. It's our own fault for going to see it as adults without checking.

Maybe jackie wanted a movie with not so much action but more about his feelings and life. i think its a good movie so far. you know use to compare to other movies he does. do not compare them. that is all your mistakes. he sign up for the movie. end of story.

Jackie chan is a little corporate whore. You will find more integrity in satan's excrement.

reply

What's the next Karate Kid movie? Any info on that? What does Jackie chan play in that?

reply

So many stupid stupid comments.

Yes ultimately he's doing this for money obviously...but you guys do realize he's 55 right? Unlike American action stars...he does his own stunts, and he probably realizes he probably can't do most of it anymore without running the risk of severely injuring himself.

Wow and you aren't much better.

reply

You apparently don't know the meaning of corporate whore.

Making a movie for kids and then using your salary for charity and funding movies in Hong Kong... how is that being a corporate whore?

You must have mistaken him for Tom Cruise. Who takes hundreds of millions of dollars for a project and then uses it to make his cult and mansion bigger.

Jackie has stated before in interviews that he was going to cut back on the action stuff and do more physical comedy type movies. He loves the old Buster Keaton physical comedy stuff and that's what he wants to do.

On top of that, the guy is over 50 years old, has a hole in his head from a stunt gone wrong and I'm sure that he's in pain everyday and still toughs it out.

So what if he does "kiddie flicks"? He's still entertaining and funny and (since I'm a fan) I'll still go and see this movie.

reply

I don't even know why I want to argue with people who are just angry and have no life...but most of the haters here seem to take this stuff so seriously and personally. Sorry to defend it by saying it's a kid's movie...but.... IT'S A KID'S MOVIE! The 8, 5, and 4 year-old I went with had a good time. I wasn't bored and there were a few laughs for adults too. Half the idiots commenting on this flick have not even seen it. Sure, there are better made movies, but to dump all over this just so you can get a boner over seeing your post here is pitiful. The PP (section8-1) has it right. Harmless, really.

Though everybody has their personal choice, I would recommend that when it comes time for you to choose, think about what your 8, 5, and 4 year-old gained from watching this. If they're trained to be entertained by bad acting and cheesy cliches, it's possible that they develop a taste for this that affects them later in life.

Yes, this is a movie for kids, but among the hundreds of other more memorable "kid's movies" that have more originality, humor, and most importantly, imagination, why would you want your kids to watch this? I find that people don't bother asking that. It's almost unethical once you realize they're raising the next generation to be dumber than the last.

Absolutely, lets join hands today to stop the young people of today from watching all the cheesy cliche ridden stuff they seem to be in love with.

Popeye the sailor, what does he do? Eat spinach and grows muscle, total fiction. Tom and jerry, what, a cat after a rat, bugs bunny, darn rabbit, and would someone tell me about this supposed ben 10, what is he, like 10..

On a side note, I enjoyed the movie, it was funny at times and Jackie Chan has some cool stunts.

Honestly, it's a genius move on his part. He's never been a real violent/bloody violence guy. With all the guns and blood and the "dark"-type action these days, as well as his age, he needed to find a new niche.

Bang...... kid's movies. It's the perfect place for him to recycle some of his stunts and choreography from his previous work. He's great with the whole Keaton/Chaplin quirky physicality. He can still make a light-hearted comedy with plenty of action, and not have to try to compete with younger stars and more violent action. He doesn't have to push himself to top his own stunts. He can do his thing, get a few laughs, and limit the dialogue (his main weak point).

While it is unfortunate for us as fans, it's the right move for him at this point.

Jackie Chan has lost his MOJO.

we should Boycott his Hollywood movie....they are a bunch of crap....The Hong-Kong movies are still watchable.

I thought he did great in The Spy Next Door but what I am not too happy about is Will Smiths idea for The Karate Kid! Why not just call his own version of it "The Black Karate Kid" so that it is completely different from the original movie that was made back in 1984? That is what I would have done so it would not tarnish or hurt that franchise.

Plus, from the previews instead of moving from the East Coast like the original out to the West Coast they have the character moving to China! I am surprised that Will Smith did not want to do the movie in Philladelphia where he is originally from. Now that would have been interesting to see the child move from the West Coast to the East Coast. That would have been different right there to be honest with you. I have mixed emotions about The Karate Kid because I do not want to support Will Smiths version of the movie but I was a fan of the original movie though. Jackie Chan might be a good Mr. Miyagi but I am not sure about wanting to go see this movie or not.

To the original op and all other haters. Do a little research and you;ll find he's still doing other movies outside of the US. Put in a little effort and pick up, or order one of those movies. Also it's a kids movie! Get over yourself. Tons of people do it, why not him? Do you slags jump to every board in regards to a kids movie and whine there too? A la: Vin, The Rock, Robin Williams, Jim Carrey etc...

Get off it already, my nephew loved it and that's all that mattered to me. I also enjoyed it too.
