Ending?

For those who have seen the movie, how did you find the ending? Well, first of all how did you interpret it? Sad or happy?

I just watched it again, and I came to the conclusion they did end up staying together

The first time I watched it I thought Natasha was just keeping her promise about letting Alba see her run, so I wasn't too sure what to think. But this time as I listened to their conversation I noticed that that promise was made when they were pretending to be brave. If they stayed together, Alba would get to see her run. So in my opinion Alba left Edurne because she could not live with all that guilt anymore, not to mention the drinking. Edurne might love Alba, but their love would always be overshadowed by the death of the little boy. And Natasha left Vadim because she knew he could never love her as much as he did her sister - she chose someone who had fallen in love with HER, not with the "reflection" of her sister.

No, I think the point was that their romance could never be, ending the movie on a sad/tragic note. They found true love, but know it can never be, and they'll live on with the memories of it.

They already decided that they wanted to just throw away their old lives and be together, but they soon realized that there was no possible way they could do that. They didn't have the finances, resources, or means to do it, nor could they just leave everything behind and start over from nothing. It was a fantasy that cold never be. They'd be going out in the world with literally only the clothes on their back and basically being bums on the street. They'd never make it, and they knew that.

As for the end, Alba commented how she really wanted to see Natacha run. Even during the brief period where they did decide to stay together before reality set in, she said how exited she was that she would be able to see Natacha run. Sadly, it couldn't be, but Natacha decided that if they couldn't be together, then she could at least do this one last thing for Alba and let her see her run before they parted ways for good.

I actually think the tragedy end makes it a better and more realistic ending than impossibility of them just throwing away everything and starting over from scratch. Kind of like the ending of Titanic. It would have been nice is Jack and Rose had ended up together, but the tragedy of their romance somehow made it more beautiful and precious, and that's what this movie did. They weren't separated by death, but by reality.
