What a piece of crap.

Terrible waste of talent, Bruce willis excepted. He was right at home here. My wife told me it was supposed to be a comedy of sorts, but the only laughs I got were laughs of derision at the completely idiotic action sequences. And yet another case of the CIA trying to kill off their own people? Stupid and cliche enough yet? What does that add vs., say, the Russians or Iranians being after the guy for revenge? Oh, wait, I know - it adds more dollars overseas because Chinese, Russians and terrorists won't be offended. So: Too dumb to be satire, not funny enough to be comedy, to silly to be serious...what the hell was the point?

".....what the hell was the point?"

errr....entertainment? perhaps you lack the ability to just switch off the part of your brain that keeps saying "That would never happen", "He would never say that", "Why would they do that?" etc etc etc.

This is just a silly, fun action film. Completely fictitious but loosely based on real organisations (CIA etc).

If you are not capable of just switching off and enjoying the film, then you really need to stop watching action films for, ultimately, they are all complete rubbish, just a lot of escapist fun, that's all.

Well done and agree with your comments :)

Thankyou Denise!!

Finally, someone on these boards who actually "gets it"!!

I agree...

"This is just a silly, fun action film."

The OP did clearly state they did not find it funny. That doesn't mean they are incapable of being entertained or should not watch action films. I've seen and enjoyed actions films, this movie bored me to tears. It appeared to be one of those movies that derives all its 'entertainment value' from the actors that we are 'supposed' to care about do to their statuses, and I don't. I prefer good writing and interesting things to see.

I soooo turned my brain off when I watched this, yet I didn not find it entertaining. When I don't care about the story or action scenes, and the dialogue seems so forced, then not even the likeable characters can save a film for me.

reply

There's good escapism and bad ATTEMPTS at escapism, though... This didn't entertain me. I like plenty of 'dumb' films because they're charming - but I didn't get that vibe from this.

Not everybody who didn't like the film misunderstood what it was going for; they just didn't appreciate it.

I agree with the OP that I did not find this movie funny. I am a fan of both comedy and actions films. Bruce Willis was not put to good use in this. Also, I could care less for the Mary Louise Parker character either. The whole movie seemed like it would have been better accepted if it were made in the 90's, not now.

Well said Selish70 - what a complete waste of 2 hours of my life! 2 / 10.

reply

I'm with the OP too.

Not the worst film in the world by any means, but it just lacked in all departments.

I don't accept the 'switch your brain off' argument either. Why can't I have substance as well as flash? If Hollywood is going to drop $58million on making an action/comedy/thriller, is it too much to ask they give a bigger percentage of that budget to the scriptwriting and overall direction? Not just shoving stunts, special effects and pretty faces on screen and saying 'meh, that will do'?

Don't get me wrong, I like a good gunfight with a few explosions here and there. I like good humour, whether its subtle or slapstick. But I also love a tautly written thriller, and genuine comedic wit. I like metaphor and subplot. An engaging and original plotline, with subtlety and nuance in performance.

I just think Hollywood robs its audience every time it sacrifices even a little substance for style.

too boring

mad magazine's Spy vs. Spy, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Grosse Point Blank get this stuff right; RED did not.

"Pretty faces"? The love interest is almost 50!!! So much for the myth that there aren't roles for geriatric actresses in Hollywood. Maybe in the sequel Bruce and Mary-Louise will have a daughter, played by Betty White, who is kidnapped and being auctioned off as a sex slave.

Yeah, you got it right.

As a russian, i enjoyed that protagonist do not kill ex-KGB/russian-mafia thugs. Like in plenty of other movies.
Oh, and they even put a positive russian character in "RED", instead on typical cliche villain with "slavic" accent.

I do hope, that in the sequel antagonist once again will not be from my country.

reply

Aw c'mon, pal, that's what Russian movies are for! And I have been enjoying most of the Russian films that make their way over here.

reply

OP, get your funny bone checked. Or consider that you might be too young to properly appreciate this movie. I laughed my head off.

reply

This movie was horrible, I felt embarrassed for the whole cast, and amazed that they actually accepted the roles.
