Sadly the animation is just bad.

I don't equate studio ghibli with great animation. They tend to follow a pattern of well done backgrounds and quick passable animation on top of it. That is how this computer animation is done and where it was almost charming when done in hand drawn films it just comes off as cheap junk when done by computer.
