Do female revenge films like these degrade or empower women?

There is a lot of debate over these kinds of films and one topic is whether or not these films centered on revenge can be called empowering or feminist or if they encourage too much inappropriate responses to violence against women to be truly empowering.

Some people believe that a film that truly empowers women would have them deal with injustice, oppression and mistreatment simply by healing, moving on and living a fulfilling life. And that these films don't do anything at all for women because they still make it more about the *beep* who wronged them than about the victims.

Others point out that there is a fine line between vengeance and justice and what one calls vengeance another calls justice. And that deep down, even if we consider ourselves pacifists, nonviolent, feminists, social justice types, we all have a desire to extract this kind of vengeance on those who hurt us and it is purely natural to use these movies as a catharsis of sorts.

This debate has been going on for years, ever since the first I Spit on Your Grave came out in 1978. And it has resulted in interesting, to say the least, debates that sometimes end up as flame wars. The original I Spit On Your Grave has been called both a feminist horror film of sorts and an anti feminist horror film of sorts too. I imagine that the same could be said for the 2010 remake.

Which side of the debate do you take?

A film like this just encourages sick people to carry out sick fantasies, be it rape or torture/murder. Since it's easier for men to carry those out against women, the only thing that films like this one lead to is, ironically, more abuse of women. We really don't need more filth like this polluting people's minds.

reply

Oh really blacknight? You've done a study on this then?
At best, the real studies prove that this stuff has no effect on real life violence, at worst it's up in the air with mixed outcomes.
You have no clue what you're talking about. Take hold of your emotions man. You're feelings on the matter are not fact.

I found a bird closing her eyes, one last time, and I wonder if she dreamed like me

Didn't we have this debate in 80s? O.o

@OP: they aren't both actually. There's sorta of formula to "rape&revenge" movies. Every men in the movie must be absolutely sick and twisted, so it justifies "revenge" part.

The only movie I can remember which kinda distance itself from this formula is "Mrs. 45" by Abel Ferrara. If I remember it well, yes, lead character does in fact get raped, then she gets raped again, then she goes all bat-sh*t insane and starts killing people at random.

however, it's been around 15 years since I've seen that movie, I could easily mistake it for another similar movies, because believe it or not, there's plenty of them.

Simple: If it degrades a female viewer, the viewer in question has no business watching this, as she obviously isn't capable of seeing the point that this film makes. If it empowers a female viewer: Congratulations, you've successfully seen the point of this film and are therefore not completely retarded.

What is a "female" revenge movie anyway... Is this any different from what a man would do?

A woman will never be able to fart in a car like a man!

"They just don't realize." "Donnie can go in there and make them love me".

Oh yeah, well, except for that!

This film does not empower women. All it shows is a woman who was brutalized left completely empty. With her revenge there is no way back to herself. At the very least, it makes the healing process even more difficult.

I think it degrades people--be it a man or a woman--by suggesting that revenge for brutal acts is perfectly just. I disagree. For someone already traumatized, it's so easy for Jennifer to lash out and act violently.

But then what? Up until she decided to go on her roaring rampage of revenge she had committed no crime, now she had committed stalking, kidnapping, assault and murder. She's looking at life in prison, a psych ward or the death penalty.

It's much more challenging and ultimately rewarding to heal. She could have gone to the state police or the FBI. Law enforcement frowns on people who use their law enforcement powers to commit crimes and they would've come down on the Sheriff hard. She could have called a friend or relative for help. It would've been tough, but she would have gotten help and at least had the chance to heal.

The final scene with the Sheriff dead we see her, a shell of a woman, with nothing to look forward to. The Sheriff's wife would've called for help and they'd eventually find the house and her sitting right where she is. Or, Jennifer might simply leave everything behind in her Camaro Z/28 only to eventually be identified and caught later.

Either way, it's not a happy ending for her. She got her revenge, but at the cost of what was left of her soul.

But wouldn't you say that the ending (her being a shell with nothing to look forward to) just proves that brutal revenge is pointless?

I agree with you on all points, though I'm not sure that in such a situation I would be able to let it go and heal. Taking revenge probably feels like something just at that moment, but is it really? In a way I guess, but it will indeed screw you up even more.

Personally I don't see how this film either degrades or empowers women. What's there to get empowerment from. That women are strong enough to take revenge? Or why degrading? Because a woman is raped in the film? Happens in real life too, why would it be degrading in film? (Unless you're one of those that believe all female nudity in films is degrading of course. Just because some women are portrayed as 'lust objects' doesn't mean all are. Die hard feminists are weird.) If anything I think such a film would make rapists think twice. As it's been debated to death, I'm probably missing a lot of things and good points pro and contra though.

LMAO LMAO I beg you hug and pray to trees too, maybe stop and smell the roses. lol It's people like you who let people like them rape women.

The problem in this discussion is that most of you are completely missing a part of it.

There is a difference between whether something is internally empowering and thereby pseudo-feminist, whether something enhances strength in the image of women to others, making it a feminist statement (i.e. showing the world a feminist message) or whether something is a full on representation of feminism.

The movie may be experienced as empowering, perhaps by some women who consider themselves victims. And as long as they remain law abiding and in a healing process, more power to them.

That, however, does NOT make something feminist.

Its feminism lies is the message it conveys about women to the world - not the internal process on the receiver's end, but in the thing being viewed itself. What does the movie say about women and empowered women? And based on that I would call this movie anti-feminist. Because it demonizes empowerment by turning it into a synonym of revenge. Because it says a woman who fights fire with fire is empowered. The only way for a woman to take back the power from a rapist is to rape him right back - a sane woman has to stoop to the psycho's level to beat him.

That's like fighting the objectification of women by objectifying men. It just spreads the issue to both sexes rather than solving it, which is in fact NOT a feminist message. That's not empowerment, it's decline.

Don't care if it was empowering or not it was freakin awesome and satisfying. Like Carrie

I agree with Johnny... "I don't take orders from no woman."

Well, with the way the police and courts deal with these types of rapist and killers. You best take vengeance and justice in your on hands. The police now days work to generate money( as in tickets). How many times have we seen rapist walk away with a slap on the hand or only get 15 years and they get out in 5. It happens all the time. Here in Dallas a man raped a 14 year old girl, he only got probation from the judge.
Police?? for get about it, they don't even give Mexican tickets anymore because they know they wont pay them. The Mexicans would rather spend 10 days in jail, the police can't spend the money to keep them and feed them for 10 days so they let them out in 1 day, so now, they don't even bother with it.
Judges, liberal judges are giving these punks less time, and making prisons a joke, a friend of mine went to prison for 2 years. He said you can get hand jobs from female guards for money. The whole system is a joke.
If I was on the jury and a woman was on trial for killing her rapist, she walks, I could care less how much prof they had on her.

Lee1888... has anybody ever told you that you need psychiatric attention?

reply

i think your mother did when I was pulling out

reply

LOL!!!!! If you sleep with my mother you are disgusting and diffidently need psychiatric help! If the only people you can bang are mothers in their 60s then that doesn't say very much about you. That's probably the only vagina you can get and you probably have to beg for it even than. Good luck in life!

reply

The best part of you ran down your mothers legs, she still doesn't know who your father is. I'm just wondering why your wife calls you maggot? Not good.

reply

Wow you call yourself a conservative but only a punk liberal 15 year old kid would talk like that. You wanna be conservative... lol. Stuff like that only insults losers like yourself. And you're too stupid to know the difference between a conservative and a liberal!

reply

The answer to the question is neither. It's just a movie and most women won't experience such trauma. The few women that unfortunately do won't go out and become sadistic psychopaths, or they certainly won't be influenced by a movie like this. I hate rape revenge flicks like this as they just justify 'two wrongs make a right' violence. I'm personally for the death penalty but I don't encourage people to all become vigilantes for the purpose of revenge.

reply

This movie pretty much degrades everyone, from the filmmakers to the the people watching it.
