Rate the 8 Films

List them 1 through 8 in order of best to worst...

reply

1. The Broken: 6/10
2. Autopsy: 5/10
3. Voices (aka Someone Behind You): 5/10
4. Dying Breed: 5/10
5. Perkins´ 14: 5/10
6. From Within: 5/10
7. The Butterfly Effect 3: 3/10
8. Slaughter: 3/10

There really isn't much that seperate the places from 2 to 6 on my list. I know I rate movies harder than the average IMDB user.

How do you rate them?

reply

I'm still watching them.

reply

1. Dying Breed: 9/10
2. From Within: 8.5/10
3. The Butterfly Effect 3 - Revelations: 8/10
4. Autopsy: 7.8/10
5. The Broken: 7.5/10
6. Voices: 7/10
7. Slaughter: 6.5/10
8. Perkins' 14: 4.5/10

The order may change a little over time as I watch them more. There were definite similarities between The Broken & From Within, except for the ending.

The Abandoned is by far my favorite Horrorfest film, but as a group this has been my favorite year so far.

Haven't seen 'em all yet (and probably won't see all 8 - dunno), but out of the ones I have seen:

From Within - 7
Autopsy - 6
The Broken - 5

Plan on seeing Slaughter and The Butterfly Effect soon. Will post again.

reply

Okay, seen 6 out of 8 thusfar:

From Within - 7 (high 7)
Perkins' 14 - 7
Slaughter - 6 (high 6)
Dying Breed - 6
Autopsy - 6 (low 6)
The Broken - 5

Hopefully I've saved the best 2 for last (Butterfly Effect II and Voices)

reply

Okay, now seen 7 out of 8 thusfar:

Butterfly Effect 3 - 8 (predictably* the best IMO, but not horror)
From Within - 7 (high 7)
Perkins' 14 - 7
Slaughter - 6 (high 6)
Dying Breed - 6
Autopsy - 6 (low 6)
The Broken - 5

Only Voices left...

*Why predictably? I rated Butterfly Effect a 10, and Butterfly Effect 2 a 9 (arguably higher than most folks). I truly dig these somewhat loosely yet tightly connected 3 movies.

reply

I've only seen 3 so far, the only ones that Redbox has, LOL. Guess I'll need to put the rest in my NF queue.

1. Slaughter (8/10)
2. Buttterfly Effect 3 (7/10)
3. From Within (5/10)

reply

What do you mean "the 8 Films". Why these 8?

reply

Forget it! Now I know!

reply

It's funny you mention 'Broken' and 'From Within' having similar plots, because I watched the trailer for 'Broken' then I wanted to watch it and forgot what it was called, and I started watching 'From Within' because I thought it was 'Broken'. How similar are they?

IS HORROR DEAD?

reply

I didn't think they were that similar, but if you haven't seen the Broken I won't spoil it for you , but I will say that From Within at least explains what's going on and The Broken it more open to interpretation, or perhaps they just didn't want to explain the inciting incidents...

reply

They are not similar in the least.

I've only watched Autopsy. My rating: 4/10

I heard Autopsy is considered one of the best from the 8 Films. If that's the case, horror is dead imo.

reply

Seen 3 so far;

Perkins 14 - Started off pretty decent, then fell into every crappy horror cliche and the main protagonists turned into idiots. 4/10

From Within - This was more like a x-files episode then a horror film. Not a bad plot, just something you expect from a tv-movie. 4/10

Dying Breed - I rather enjoyed this one. Its the best out of the 3 I have seen. 5/10

So far, the horrorfest movies this year don't seem to be holding up to the last two. I know these are low budget movies, but I do not find them scary when the writer make the main charters out to be bumbling idiots. The moment I see the "lets split up" cliche, I lose all respect in the writer.

I read somewhere that based on reviews, user ratings etc. the 8 films stack up like this:

1. From Within
2. Voices
3. Autopsy
4. The Broken
5. Slaughter
6. Butterfly Effect 3
7. Dying Breed
8. Perkins 14

Of the three I have seen I would tend to agree. From Within was really good and has a great young cast, Autopsy is kind of stupid but fun and The Broken is disappointingly boring.

I actually liked the Broken. I like mood pieces though.

Of the 5 that I have seen, I really enjoyed 4 of them. I don't think I will be able to see the other 3, but if I do, I will update.

1) Dying Breed. I seriously thought I would like this one the least, but I LOVED it. (I can't even remember why I decided to rent it). A not too gory cannibal, redneck movie with a decent plot/storyline. I enjoyed it more than Wrong Turn. Did remind me of Wolf Creek a bit (although I don't know if that was because the same actor is in both films.) It had a little bit more plot than just "escape and run screaming into the forest" like a lot of films of that kind. Also reminded me of the movie "Hush" for some reason (which I also enjoyed, although no cannibals)

2) Slaughter. I really liked it - just a brainless, fun horror movie that totally kept me entertained. It had a TON of typical horror sequences, but made them a little more original.

3) From Within. I couldn't decide whether to rank this #2 or #3, but it didn't quite hold my attention like Slaughter. Still fun to watch, especially if you enjoy campy, cheesy, low-budget horror films :). Although I don't think any of these were too campy.

4) Perkins 14. I also liked this movie a lot; it had a decent plot and some good ideas, but ended up playing out kind of generically overall.

5) Autopsy. Sucked, sucked sucked. But I'm not really into weirdo hospital movies, so that didn't help. They ALL seem to be the same, as did this one. But I did see "Dark Floors" a few weeks ago and enjoyed that.

Anybody have any other recommendations? I guess I've never really picked up on the "horrorfest" thing before. How long have they been doing it? Are there always just 8 movies per year?? Another movie I enjoyed was "Eden Lake".

I've seen all three years of movies, here is how I stack them up (keep in mind that these ratings have to be taken in context....8/10 in the Horrorfest lineup is a 2/10 if compaired to Silence of the Lambs or Jaws):

2008
From Within 7/10
Dying Breed 6/10
The Broken 6/10
Autopsy 5/10
Voices 5/10
Butterfly Effect 3 4/10
Perkins 14 4/10
Slaughter 2/10

2007
Borderland 8/10
Frontiere(s) 7/10
The deaths of ian stone 5/10
Nightmare Man 3/10
Mulberry Street 3/10
Lake Dead 2/10
Tooth and Nail 2/10
Crazy Eights 2/10
Unearthed 2/10

2006
The Abandoned 7/10
Penny Dreadful 6/10
The Gravedancers 5/10
The Hamiltons 5/10
Wicked Little Things 4/10
Unrest 3/10
Rinne 3/10
Dark Ride 2/10
Did not see The Tripper or Hood of Horror

Overall this year was the best. Last year had the two best films of the with Borderland and Frontiere(s) but it really dropped off after those two.
My top 5 overall from the Horrorfest collection:
1. Borderland
2. Frontiere(s)
3. From Within
4. The Abandoned
5. Dying Breed
