Yeah the meta-humor is out of control in this show... It's very subtle and usually deliver lightning quick but they take so many stabs at FOX it's criminal.
I just noticed one the other day while re-watching the series. It's in the Math Lab episode (which would have been the 5th to air before it was originally pulled). Sue says (while trying to figure out a way to show the parents they are actaully doing something), "Well maybe we can find one really scary problem, and say all the kids have it". To witch Ennis replies, "teachers who don't care"... and almost before he finishes his sentence Helen slips in (almost inaudible at first) "Low Simpsons retention".
That is exactly what they were being criticized for in the ratings after only 2 airings... That they couldn't hold 'The Simpsons' audience. Ironically, the Cleveland show now shows a similar drop off but has been given another season already...
I almost died laughing when I finally picked up on what she said. Later on in the a exchange Larry refers to everything mentioned as 'made-up problems' and then seems to blast them for not advertising the show (When he makes reference to 'non-existent promos'). Perhaps a stab at them changing the time slot from 8:30 Sunday to 7:00 Sunday without mentioning it to viewers... naturally if you move a show earlier in the schedule and don't tell the people who want to watch it, you will get terrible ratings. Not the shows fault though. I can remember tuning in at *:30 that day and just being so angry at them. I had missed the show because they put it on at 7:00 and didn't tell anyone. They have time and time again proven themselves to be completely inept on every level... Don't get me into the ridiculous guitar-shredding robot that is somehow the networks NFL mascot... and the ridiculous gopher that is all over their NASCAR broadcasts. This channel presents itself as one for halfwits and children. This show doesn't appeal to the lowest common denominator so it's not surprising it would never work on FOX.
This is the same thing they did to Family Guy that originally caused it to fail, and it's the same thing they did to Arrested Development. FOX is a proven show killer, but it seems as thought they had it in for this show from the very get go. They gave it less than a chance to succeed and actaully contributed quite nicely to it's ultimate demise. I'm starting to think it was deliberate... There were contract disputes early on that could have soured the network to the show. It seems like a power struggle situation to me, with the network ultimately pulling rank.
God news is Comedy Central has realized this is a valuable property and is trying to buy the rights to air the re-runs. The Jokes ripping FOX will connect even better in that situation.
It doesn't look like we will get any more new episodes at this point, but Comedy Central airing the repeats at least keeps that door open. It's a shame. This show is smart and funny while still being low-brow on the surface. Very unique.
