question about line in movie

When Bennet says to Mel Gibson "what does it feel like", why is he asking that?
It makes sense when Mel pulls Bennets car over and asks him the same question but I'm not sure why Bennet asks Mel in the 1st place.

John Noble/Walter Bishop is the Rolls Royce of actors/characters

Yes, it makes more sense as a "set-up" line for the later encounter between the two. Notwithstanding, it seemed to me that, when the two first met in Bennett's office that he (Bennett) was just pretending to be empathetic with Gibson in the loss of his daughter, since he had stated earlier (as I recall) that he himself had children.

It makes sense if you're schlock writer, but it doesn't make sense if you consider what people would really say.

Given that only someone with a major personality disorder, mental disability, or character defect would ask a question like that of a parent whose only child has just been murdered, and in such a detached, intellectually curious manner, I think it's the viewers' first solid hint that Jack Bennett is a full-blown sociopath -- something that is amply confirmed later on in the film.

Well said!

How was it "amply" confirmed?

The official story is, Cravens daughter is shot by accident. That Craven comes up to Bennett says clearly, that Craven does not believe that and follows other hints. And he asks questions about North Wood. Bennett knows, why Craven is there. The line is a warning.

I thought he was just being a jerk.

i think that's just to show what a sadistic sick character the guy is.

it Was a very odd line

something someone might think, but wouldn't actually say out loud

how often does someone,
who is actually trying to hide something Big, give this kind of a hint?

i've called my congresswoman, and she said she would look into it

it's mentioned at least twice that Emily believed Bennet to be "insane,"
i think that his question alludes to it
