The daughter's illness

I thought it was strange that Adam Driver had to take the 2 year deep space mission to pay for his daughter's medical treatment. It meant that they weren't living in some kind of high tech, post-scarcity society or even one with universal health care.

We don't know what her illness was, but he mentions later in the film that she died while he was on this voyage (contrary to the wife's claim in the opening scene that she would survive because the mission would pay for her therapy), which also means that however high tech this civilization is, their medical technology is limited somehow.

Well it could be like in our times. Only the rich have all the medical care available...
