I wondered if the authorities would try to prosecute Thomas and Laura even though Ali committed suicide. Rather sad, of course, but all 3 characters were more complicated than they initially seemed. Thomas and Laura feel some guilt but will no doubt carry on. Happily ever after? I doubt.
Also I questioned whether Ali had actually gone to the Leipzig clinic and received a 2-year prognosis. As in many noir films the characters lied to protect their perceived interests. But Ali had experienced symptoms in an earlier scene so his clinic story may have been true. He had 'valid' reasons for ending his life a little prematurely.

2-years? Maybe it was translated poorly, but I just watched this on Vudu in German with English subs, and he told her he had two months to live, maybe three.

I just watched the scene gain, and the English subs have him say "I've got two months to live, Laura. Maybe three."

If it was two years, I imagine she would have not tried to call off Thomas and would just go ahead with the murder plot. Of course we don't know if Ali actually went to a clinic and had the diagnosis he said, but I thought the scenes of him seeming sick earlier foreshadowed that and we're supposed to believe it. And as you say, if the diagnosis was fake, he wouldn't have committed suicide.
