nicholas case is back

After several crappy movies cage had played in the past several years for settling his financial dues, I think that in this movie he finally got back to what he was like before, a talented actor. I wasn't too crazy about the acting of January Jones, she was a little stiff and dry. Pearce, as always, rules any movie he stars in.

Agreed about Nicholas Cage :).

I agree also. Nick is coming back, with a vengeance.

reply

i agree, it was a nice movie.. worth a watch, unlike his other crap movies... i totally disagree on the negative comments about this movie.

reply

Agreed, best Cage film in a long time.

Nicholas Cage has always been a good actor in my opinion. Sure, he starred in some bad movies, but as an actor, I've always liked him. Let's not forget he is an Academy Award winning actor. I think people just generally don't like him because he's somewhat aloof in his style and unorthodox. I've always thought he's a spectacular talent irrespective of some of his bad movies.

i don't know, seems like every movie lately he's just playing himself. maybe i just can't get past his speech/mannerisms. but i still like watching him alot(in movies that aren't terrible to begin with)

He's already been back for a few years. Have you not seen Knowing, Kick-Ass and Drive Angry?

100percent agreed. but sadly, this film is a step backwards. (Knowing (8/10) is somewhere between my 2nd-4th favorite film of 2009. Kick-Ass (8/10) is my 2nd favorite film of 2010 and Drive Angry(7/10), while it might NOT be in my Top 10 of 2011, was still a good simple action film overall. it's probably in my Top 15 of 2011 though but could possibly be barely into Top 10-ish.)

it started off decent enough but eventually as the film went on it just turned back into the typical film of it's type. so it basically fizzled out as the film went forward and ultimately, while not bad for a viewing, is not all that entertaining overall and that's the key area a film must succeed otherwise it will fail.

and like i always say... a film is ultimately made or broke in the long run based on if it's a film you want to see more than once and this is not a film i would want to see more than once.

bottom line... i give Seeking Justice a 6/10 (maybe a 5.5) (Thumbs Down)

just looking at Nicolas Cage's 2011 films... Trespass (7/10, maybe a 6.5) and Drive Angry (7/10) where better as those i gave a Thumbs Up unlike this film. but i would say this film was better than 'Season of the Witch' (5/10) though.

p.s. a MUCH better film from the same director = The Worlds Fastest Indian (2005) (10/10, maybe a 9) (even conservatively i would still say it's a solid 8)

knowing, aside from roger ebert, was ill-received by critics; and despite making more money than most cage flicks, it wasn't exactly loved by audiences.

kick-ass wasn't really a nicolas cage movie; he had a small role, and yeah, it was fun, but it wasn't enough to revitalize a career.

drive angry was basically the culmination of all good bad nic cage movies, and i think he might not have been in on the joke, which is why it works. the director every day was probably like, I can't believe this guy doesn't know we're mocking him. but it wasn't a success and in fact lost a lot of money, despite being fun.

critically/performance-wise his only real comeback was bad lieutenant, but it didn't make much money; audiences didn't respond to it. but artistically i think that was his last real comeback.

since then he's done, what: this, bangkok dangerous, season of the witch, a terrible film with nicole kidman and the upcoming (poorly received at test screenings) ghost rider 2. and now comes word he wants to make wicker man 2. the man is a wacko genius and i love it, but at this rate he'll be a permanent staple of the straight-to-dvd bin in a decade.

which is remarkable given that ten years ago he truly was a box office draw, despite the occasional bad film. i can't really see him being cast in another family man or con-air these days.

What Would Gibson Do?

reply

I like Nic Cage and will forgive him most things, but this wasn't anything special. I don't regret watching it, but wouldn't repeat the exercise.

Guy Pearce was good, and showed what happens when vigilantism is backed by local police and goes too far.
