white?

Anyone else notice the fact that her grandmother was white, her mother was white, her babies were white, and her cartoon thing in the beginning was white? I feel as though they were just telling us to ignore the fact that J Lo is not, in fact, white and just pretend she is.

I've said my piece...have at it.

I noticed the cartoon thing too, I was like JLo's not white and I think it would have been impossible for her to have redhead babies cuz I think (I'm not sure tho) that in order to have redhead children both parents need to have the redhead gene even if it's recessive so I think we were supposed to believe that her character was white :S

But you never know who the male lineage is. Again, that may be deemed as racist because it says the non-white side of her family didn't stick around and deserted her family. The only person she can trust is a white guy. But it's funny I never noticed that there were all these white characters in her family. I don't know what to feel. It could be forced racism, by saying that underneath we all want to be a white world. What was the other general make up of varying the cultures and races in the movie? All the characters I remember are white. That Cesar guy, what race is he? Maybe he and J-Lo were the only non-whites. Maybe they should've fallen in love.

This is not the only movie in which this has happened. The truly awful "The Wedding Planner", she was italian. That was one of the really annoying things about that movie to me. She couldn't just be latina?

reply

Has anyone complained yet about Angelina Jolie pretending she was black in A Mighty Heart or Sean Penn pretending he was gay in Milk? A movie is just a play on film. We should be proud that a woman of color has been made the vehicle of a movie in America. Baby steps, people.

reply

Actually some people did complain about Angelina's movie.

reply

I couldn't agree more!

reply

*Sigh*...Here we go again.

reply

Yeah I thought it was strange that her grandma was about as White as you get and we all know Jlo isn't a straight up White lady lol.

I just don't understand why not give her Puerto Rican Parents and call it a day?, they always make her Italian or kill of her birth parents and raised by someone who clearly is White.

I'm not going to get into the whole Latino isn't a race, European Spanish blood crap, because it's a tired irritating argument. We all know that people call themselves latino and latina and we all know that they clearly are not calling themselves White. So why not give her Latino parents?

Hispanic is not a race, but I think this and TWP are the only two films where she's not portrayed as being of a hispanic background. I do know she never has a hispanic love interest in her films unless it's a film based on real life. A bio film.

Giorgio Armani. He must be Creole.

What color was her daddy?

On the aspect of "skin color" Hispanics can be either White (very light skinned, more European) or Black (dark skinned-more African), but from an ethnic standpoint Hispanic is a group, such as Asians, White (European, Middle Eastern, Northern African), Black (African)...etc. For the example-Puerto Ricans are a mix of European, African, and Native Americans, and some Hispanic ethnic groups like Colombians, Argentinians, Brazilians, Uruguayans have a large mix of European descent, so they have light skin, blonde hair + blue eyes (lighter coloring)--same with some white Cubans...etc, as well as Puerto Ricans like Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez who have more lighter features and have the "standard" Hispanic look-then there are very dark/African Hispanics like Afro-Cubans, many Dominicans, and some Puerto Ricans...Brazilians..Colombians...etc, like-Maritza Correia (Puerto Rican of African descent, black-Puerto Rican)

I would have preferred that her character was also Puerto Rican, and acknowledged that because I think it's something to be very proud of it, but at the same time-a lot of Hispanic actors in the 1950's-or 1960's were light skinned and could be passed off as being "White/Anglo-Saxon" (like Irish, or English), so they were able to get a lot more work and more "marketable to White America" instead of actually being Hispanic...like Rita Hayworth.

And on the genetics aspect-the sperm donor had light-skin + red hair, and it looks like the twins also had the same coloring, so technically-it's possible if J.LO's character also had redhair at somepoint in the bloodline + to be technical-there are also redheaded Puerto Ricans. There were some people during the Irish famine that migrated to Puerto Rico (Instead of the U.S) + that's why some Puerto Ricans do have redhair and sometimes Irish last names.

Okay, I appreciate your comments... but I hope you realize I had no problem with her "skin color"... I only asked what color is her daddy to point out that he could have been Spanish, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Nicaraguan, whatever... no one knew... and why it's the topic of an entire discussion, I don't know... does it really matter?

I noticed it. It didn't irritate me, all her movies she either chooses to play non- Hispanic people. Or it's offered to her. I think she should choose an equal amount of latin as well as white ones.
Look at Zoe Saldana- she's Dominican & she portrays Blabk women . That taking roles away from Black actresses. You gotta realize in Hollywood they group everyone Non-white as 3 groups(Black, Latin,or Asian ) in 1 group

reply

Zoe Zaldana may be Dominican... but she is BLACK... Jesus she isn't taking any roles from any black women because she is herself BLACK...Have you not noticed, at all?

You can be Dominican and BLACK... it's not just an American thing, you know.
