Very Underrated Movie

I saw this in the movie theater and since it's been on cable lately I haven't been able to stop watching it. Sure it had its flaw (it was about a half hour too long), but there was way more good than bad. The Lone Ranger, Tonto and the main villian were all fully developed characters. The scenery was impressive and the climax with the two trains was one of the best set pieces I've ever seen in a movie theater.

My sentiments exactly! It really puts you on the spot. I can't even begin to fathom why it's disliked.

I loved it, but I can understand why it is disliked. They make the Lone Ranger out to be a buffoon at the beginning. They make it a comedy, but then throw in serious points about genocide and corruption. The villains are cartoonish, but also very dark. People don't like mixed genres -- they want action, or comedy, or drama. I like complexity. Tonto is played by a white actor. It's too long for people with short attention spans. The trailer led people to expect something other than what the movie was.

I absolutely loved this film for it's nuances and quirkiness. It had the business and layered effect of one of my all time favorites, Richard Lester's Three Musketeers.

But you absolutely nailed the litany of reasons why this movie failed, especially the mixed genres theme. It was a movie without an audience..

PEARLS BEFORE SWINE, I say!!!

I would go as far as saying this is the most underrated movie of all time. Like you said, it's a little too long and has flaws, but that doesn't make it a bad movie. It had fully developed characters, a great villain, two great leads, great effects, a good story, and some funny comedy. This movie has a 6.5 when it should have a 7.3-7.5

I agree.

This is true.

I just watched it again. And my thoughts exactly. I cant think of any other movie where so much inaccurate information got out there as fact. Or where people made up their minds without even seeing it... that Tonto was Sparrow and a ridiculously confusing plot. Tonto was nothing like Sparrow, I thought Depp was great and the plot was very well written, tight, easy to follow and such an awesome movie overall. I give it 3 1/2 out of 4 stars.

i agree it's a bit too long but it's one of the better movies of 2013. in fact, it's my #13 spot of 2013 out of the 115 2013 released movies.

7/10

hell, if this movie was released this year it would currently stand as my favorite big budget movie of 2014. i have yet to see Edge of Tomorrow though which is the only big budget movie i got any hopes for this year and i think has a good chance to beat The Lone Ranger for me.

p.s. i just finished re-watching this on Sep 7th/8th 2014, which makes for my 2nd viewing of it total now and it held up.

------------------------------------------------

My Top 13 movies of 2013 out of the 115 2013 released movies i have seen...

1.The Wolf of Wall Street - 8/10
2.Before Midnight - 7-7.5/10
3.At Middleton
4.Adore - 7/10
5.Only God Forgives
6.Spring Breakers
7.Captain Phillips
8.Rush
9.The Artist and the Model
10.Nebraska
11.Warm Bodies
12.We're the Millers
13.The Lone Ranger

i have seen all thirteen movies there above at least twice now. some that used to be in my Top 15-ish area of 2013 have taken a hit on a re-watch while others held steady and some grew a bit stronger. my 2013 list should be pretty stable at this point.

Even though you rated it a respectable 7.0, I found The Lone Ranger better scripted and more entertaining than most of those movies on your list.

reply

I enjoyed it. I thought it was very clever with great special effects.

reply

It was OK. It was certainly better than the 80's version, which I am still not able to sit through. I thought Depp was very good. He made Tonto a much more prominent and interesting character than he usually is.

reply

He broke stereotypes too.

It's completely underrated. 38/100 on Metacritic, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! If it wasn't because the Pirates movies existed I doubt Lone Ranger would be as hated.

I just love Gore Verbinski! He always makes satisfying films and to my mind he hasn't made a bad movie yet. I love his quirky style and sense for action. His movies are just fun! I love his one and only horror movie The Ring, but he really found his calling with his Pirates trilogy. The crazy over the top adventure films are a guilty pleasure of mine.

It doesn't hurt that his films are always gorgeous, well made and exciting. The Lone Ranger's train chase is one of the best action scenes ever! It rivals the last crazy action scene in Pirates 3. I wish I saw this in theaters instead of a small screen on Netflix!

If you like The Lone Ranger, watch his animated film Rango! It's clear he wanted to bring some of that quirkiness to live action.

This is one of the few movies I have seen that actually does get better with multiple viewings. It was kinda of ok the first time I watched it, but each time I re-watch it gets a little bit better and FUNNIER! It seems it was very under rated more so because people were expecting a remake of the old series. As its own movie, it stands up quite well!

reply

It certainly does.

reply

Completely agree.
I skipped it in theaters because of all the bad reviews and word of mouth but since then I've watched it three times and it has never bored me.
It is a bit too long and there are flaws, but as far as entertainment goes, it is pretty decent.

reply

This film is excellent and no more flawed than most blockbusters.

reply

It was great, actually. Movie theaters gave up on it too soon, it was gaining word of mouth. It got a big round of applause at the theater I went to.

The stunts were exceptional, and the ending sequence was fantastic -- far better than the CGI slug-fests at the end of the contemporary superhero movies that did far better.
