I know Dick is Richard. Chuck is Charles, Jim is James..... but I've NEVER heard. A John being called Jack or vise versa

shareMe either. I'm always perplexed as to why Bob is short for Robert when there's already Rob.

shareSince always. It's one of those nicknames that people have over the years turned into a "real" name, but it's always been a diminutive of John. You do know Bob is short for Richard too right? ;)

You're right. It's been a while but I think I had edited that sentence. I may have originally had both examples, but in paring it down I must have left the wrong full name. I tend to rant about stupid stuff, then have to go back and delete 90% of it. Either way, ooops! (Given I had an Uncle Bob and my dad's best friend is Dick you would think I could get at least those two straight.) :)
shareIt is sometimes used as a nickname for Jonathan. Stargate's Colonel O'neil is called Jack, but his name is Jonathan.
shareVery common, actually. So much so that most people you know and call Jack were born John.
