I really enjoyed this film, if only America had more Walt Kowalskis

Here was a hard working loving family man who unfortunately saw his community rot into a gang infested slum. He was not shackled by PC Hollywood nonesense he called things like he saw them and never backed down. This was a great American and unfortunately hes a dying breed.
I'm not surprised Hollywood doesnt make more movies like this.

maybe you two should go and see the film again...

I loved how he wasn't the slightest bit nervous confronting the gangbangers. Classic Dirty Harry stuff.

what you enjoy an old white guy pointing guns at random asian american families and pounding on black teenagers? This shows whites in the US still think minorities should be less than equal in society, in europe we squashed black slavery years before MLK in England blacks were free over 100years before they were in the US

reply

But minorities ARE less than equal. They live in "projects". They nothing about hard work, other than shooting, stealing and killing and they are under-class. They have no income, and whatever income they do have, it was stolen from someone who's worked a day in their lives. But it's easy to pull the race card when there's a white person in any movie, no matter what the plot is about or who the person is.

Slavery in Europe has ended, and so has in America, but are you so foolishly blinded by the fact that there is no racism in Europe? Please. Have you ever heard of a Gypsy person? They're treated as Blacks were in the 1950's. I'm sure you're familiar with the term "Roma's" right? Everyone in Europe hates them. I hate them, they are nothing but an infection to Europe. These are not people. They claim to be Indian, but the Indian people living here are far more civilized than Gypsies could ever hope to be.

This is just the way the world works. If you're not good enough, then you will not be treated equally.

Holy, sweet Jesus that is racist.

Yep, and true.

What's a race card? Where can I get one? 😒 KOKO racist. Your folks are being stomped out. And you're afraid you might have to answer for your racism and the sins of your father(s). I understand. *pats racist's head*

reply

We should pat you on the head, give you a cookie and send you on the way since you obviously missed the point of his reply to the other poster.

the sins of your father(s).

Why should anyone answer for those?

reply

Walts even mean as hell to the priest ! Hes not 'racist'. he just doesn't like bs and is a bit crabby at 80 yrs old. You all heard how he talked to the barber, the boss at the construction site didn't you ? He warmed up to his neighbors pretty quick once he got to know them. It wasn't incumbent on him to make friends with them - they had the same onus.
Did you notice the old ladies attitude towards him ? She hacked one up better than he.
If he were truly racist he wouldn't have given 2 sheets what happened to those kids.
We are getting this bs racist meme shoved down our throats to the point that its become so distorted that its hardly recognizable.

reply

Yup.

reply

Well depending on where you live, the minority may be blacks, hispanics, foreigners, or whites. If you're strictly scrambling all the lazy people out there who live in projects and on welfare and whatnot, then I'd have to agree that your comments, based on what I have seen, apply to the latter, but they made up the majority of the population.

reply

In this movie, Walt is the minority.

reply

Random Asians and poor little black kids? Are you retarded? They were gang bangers and thugs. I hope you are lucky enough to run into some of that type so they can play hide the salami in your about to be dead anus.

reply

He was a "semi-family" man - by his own admission, he was never close to his sons. He definately loved his wife - that much came through loud and clear. I DID enjoy watching his sons, daughters-in-law and granddaughter get their come-uppance at the reading of the will. You could see the greed in their faces.

As far as being politically correct, I don't consider myself PC, but I don't use the slurs Walt uses to define people. We are all much more than just the color of our skin.

As far as him being a dying breed, I don't think so .... there's a lot of Americans just like him.

Cats are delicate dainty animals who suffer from a variety of ailments ... except insomnia.

reply

Yeah. This is an awesome film. I love Clint Eastwood, and I'm so un-happy about his not staring in any more films.

Thankfully. Cute racists are great in the movies, but in real life not so amusing.

Brilliantly insightful comment. Piss off, huh? Not quite the point of threads is it, to say agree with me or else you should piss off?

reply

Kowalski clearly wasn't a happy man. You think everyone should be like him? I'd rather die than get like that. And the way it portrayed his family as parasites was done so cartoonishly, it was ridiculous. I knew they were going to try to get him out of the house to sell it before it even happened. They weren't totally, bad, though. Imagine being raised by a guy like Walt. I bet his kids left the house the second they could.

reply

Yeah, like most people in America, unfortunately, I've met plenty of people raised by people like Walt, and met plenty of people just like him, and they are truly the ones keeping America from advancing. Very rarely, if ever, do they actually turn out like Kowalski, to be a decent, tolerant, self-sacrificing mentor type, usually they just run around railing against immigrants, praising morons like Bush and Palin, and accusing Obama of being born in another country, while claiming Jews own the government and control the money while black people and illegals contribute to 99 percent of the crime. Real adorable people, those racist conservatives. Of course, Walt was reformed, I realize, and I liked the movie, it's just obvious to normal humans that too many Walt's is a dangerous thing in REAL life.

reply

Who's stereotyping now?

reply

I am. I'm categorizing a group of people based on the fact that many within the group follow the example I am presenting, although I am taking into account those who are generalized by a PERSONALITY type presented by the movie, not ethnic background, skin color etc. What's wrong with that? I can't give you a full psychological breakdown of millions of individuals, so yes, I am generalizing about conservative, loud mouthed, racist Americans I have had the displeasure of knowing personally.

reply

[deleted]

Genius. Say I've talked myself into a corner, but don't say how. Okay, I'll use the same technique and logic...everything YOU said contradicts itself. No need to justify that statement, but it must be true, because I just said it. Yes, I've admitted I'm stereotyping. You're brilliant, but obviously missed my point entirely. Of course there is a slight double standard since I am stereotyping, but I am stereotyping a personality based on what we are given true insight to, not a generalization on skin color or country of origin. How else can we discuss a personality type encompassing a large group without some level of generalization?

As for the more legitimate question of "advancing into what", I would say advancing towards a society that appreciates other people and cultures without needing near death experiences and forced full scale integration to learn to live with others without throwing racial epithets and warnings to keep away at gunpoint. But if you read my "stereotyping" of the type of person your average (unreformed) Walt Kowalski takes, I mean advancement AWAY from that.

reply

At this risk of sounding racist, I do not see a true difference between stereotyping based on age, sex, race, personality traits, religion, social upbringing, economic class, or as many as possible because all of those do in fact play in to who we are and how we act.

For example, I never take offense when serial killers are profiled as predominantly white, because a disproportionate number or serial killers are white. White collar crimes such as certain types of fraud are also done by a disproportionate number or whites. Certain crimes, especially violent crimes, are done more frequently (proportionally) by african americans youths from low income neighborhoods than any other group. Can you explain how or why it is exceptable to profile serial killers as older white males, but not profile other crimes?

reply

Because you are white. A people with the unique ability to only take offense on the behalf of other people.

It's not true by the way. A media lie. FBI says whites are not overrepresented on the statistics. If you remove all the hispanics who are wrongly counted as white, white people may in fact be underrepresented on the statistics.

reply

How is it any different from liberals railing against Bush?? radicals of ANY creed SUCK

Ohhhh... Mace in the Face, I realize now you're the "piss off if you don't agree with me" person. Shouldn't have wasted my time trying to explain my point of view to you, I should have just "pissed off", because I'm such a "dumbass" for disagreeing with you. Sincerest apologies.

reply

[deleted]

These are all valid points and I don't necessarily disagree, it's the blatant xenophobia and racism (again, reformed as he was decent deep down) that he displayed that makes me lump him in with a personality type I dislike, many of us are fed up with certain aspects of American (and often global)civilization today. I do disagree, however, that America is the "greatest nation of slackers, debtors and cowards in the history of the world." I get your point, but that's a bit harsh.

America has plenty Walt Kowalskis.

reply

True.

reply

I loved Walt's character in this movie. He reminds me of my father on a lot of levels. And to all of you who hate on him, may all of your neighborhoods be infested by gangbangers. Then we'll see how how open minded you are. Gah.

Come with me if you want to live.

reply

[deleted]

Isreal.....you have to be one of the biggest fakes I have ever had the misfortune to see here on these boards! You claim that you are so against movies that are violent and inappropriate for children but yet you support characters like Walt Kowalskis???? Your double standards are so clear it is not even funny...

reply

[deleted]

You didn't get the main emotion theme of Walt's life at ALL, did you?

Try to look past your knee-jerk reaction to the violence on the surface, and look just a WEE bit deeper at the adult themes presented. Fighting the neighborhood punks was NOT the theme of the movie - maybe it was to a six-year old.

Perhaps a friend or family member could explain it to you.

P.S. - Walt mentoring the young man was the success...his sacrifice to the gang members was ultimately his FAILURE, but it was a sacrifice to appease his tortured conscience.

The whole "gang infested slum" was a "METAPHOR" for other problems in Walt's life. Go look it up...

Mr. Eastwood makes movies with a lot more depth in concept than his old "Dirty Harry" roles. In fact, this was an "anti-Dirty Harry" movie if you can understand it.

reply

I didn't think Walt changed so much as relaxed. I got the impression that deep down he wasn't averse to getting along with the Hmong characters, just that they reminded him of his past in Korea and he'd cocooned himself after returning from Korea. It was less of a change and more of a revelation in my opinion.
