I didn't understand the ending part where he (spoilers)

He reaches into his sled and finds his old hammer, Skullcrusher, with a note attached, "Thought you might need this" (or whatever it said), and signed "Mrs. C".

But earlier in the movie he said that if he had one wish, it'd be to have Mrs. Claus alive again and to be able to tell her how much he loved her.
What's up with that?
He didn't react to the note at all except to be happy about getting his hammer back, anyone know what I might have missed here? Was he just really blasé about getting his wife back after all this time, or what?

He just said he wanted to tell Mrs. Claus he loved her again, he didn't specify she was dead. Likely was expecting to die and figured he never get the chance.
