If he's from Africa, why is he white?

The adopted son...South African?

This is the whole problem with the ethnicity-American cr@p. Would this post have began if the character was a Black person who claimed to be an Italian-American? I don't believe it would have. We seem to have this idea that the only people who can claim to be African-American are people who are Black. I would consider Charlize Theron and Dave Matthews to be more African-American than I would those that are born in the US.

It's because in our current culture "african/ american" means "black". It does not mean someone originating from Africa now living here, or anything sensible like that. I'm a white guy and personally have never used the term. It seems very condescending to me, or as if people previously implied something bad when calling someone "black". Well I never meant any such negative thing. I call me white, call someone else black or something descriptive yet without any implied extraneous meaning. No black folks have ever let me know they were offended by it, so I'm sticking with it. I basically look at it as what would I want to be called, and that's the best I could come up with it and I refuse to overthink a situation that doesn't merit it. "African-American" is misleading and insulting in my opinion.

Freddie Mercury was born in Africa (Zanzibar)

Freddie Mercury was Asian. He was just in Africa because his dad was doing work for the British government there.

It's funny and smart. The funniest things in life are always unintentional.

IT'S THE MOVIE! NOT THE BOOK! NOT THE SHOW! NOT THE COMIC! GET OVER IT!

I for one found this a pretty funny joke. I mean I hate the term African American coming from someone who is not from Africa. If they were born in Africa, then came here later, yes they would be African American, just like a person from Poland would be Polish-American. Other wise you're just American.

There are tons of Americans who still identify with their land of descent. I've met people who have generations born in America but still call themselves Italian or Irish. Why would you care what someone calls themselves?

Don't tell me what I can't do!

reply

Last time I checked Irish American or Italian American wasn't on any census forms I have seen. It is BS because it's people labeling themselves as something they are not. If your great grand parents were from Ireland then you have Irish heritage, you are though not from Ireland. Like that kid is actually from Africa...eh why do I bother explaining.

Race in general is BS. Most of the labels are false if you give ANY thought to them, might as well let people label themselves.

There are people of all races that live in Africa, just like there are people of all races that live in any continent/country. Someone who has been born in Africa regardless of their race and their family then they could be seen as more of African American then blacks whose family have been over here for centuries or decades.

I'm assuming this is a "Mean Girls" reference, so I'm going to laugh and ignore it. Lol.

reply

OMG, you're kidding, right?

Pleasssssse do your homework BEFORE posting an uneducated question like that.

reply

why the ???-AMERICAN tag on everything? if ur from america and move to africa and become a citizen, then do u become AMERICAN-AFRICAN?
all this labeling is crap. like hispanic or latino. you could be from 100 different countries and still claim one or the other. i'm a mix race and have been discriminated against, mostly for my white blood. i live in a mostly "hispanic" community.

life is short. Play.

also seems like most people dont know that egypt and libya are IN AFRICA!

I was reading in Glamour Magazine that a girl tried to put "African American" on her college forms to get money towards school and they didn't go for it. she was born in Egypt. lol.

Wow...didn't realize such a violent response from making a joke

A) I asked this question before I had seen the episode
B) I know that there are plenty of white people in Africa, especially the country of South Africa (stupid 10th grade world history test, why does one country need 3 capitals *grumble grumble*) This is why I said "South Africa" with a question mark, asking if that was where they adopted him from. Perhaps if I had added a word, maybe like "South Africa, right?" people would have removed the sticks from their butts before posting.

Honestly, I deduced that this family either went through the adoption process and then were very surprised to get a white African child, or they REQUESTED a white child for some silly reason like the child not realizing he was adopted right away - I'm sure if the show makes it a full season they'll probably dedicate a whole episode to the kid's origins.

Seriously, I just wanted to make the "Mean Girls" joke - you guys are such party poopers. Based on your overly acerbic responses, maybe you're the types of people this show was based on - people who conform so strictly to a stereotype (like being PC) that they end up looking even more narrowminded than the rest of us.

Maybe you should remove the aforementioned stick and find yourselves a "Sense of Humor" suppository...

Brunettes do it better...
