"He's a whacko or an illegal immigrant." What??????

I liked this film, but this was said as the very last line of the film and I am still scratching my head trying to figure out WTF was that was even supposed to mean.

There was live video feed of the station correct? The original Sam could easily be found correct? So obviously everything the clone said could be proven so why would anyone call him a whacko and even more puzzling is why anyone would call him an illegal immigrant? What a stupid end cap for an otherwise good film.

reply

Like Weyland Yutani in Alien, the company that ran the moon base was willing to compromise on ethics for the bottom line. When clone Sam returns to Earth, he carries with him news that would probably destroy the company. (which you can imagine is probably the biggest company in the world) So, is anyone on Earth going to want to believe this news that would cause 100,000 people to lose their jobs and energy prices to skyrocket? The answer is no. People would be desperate to not believe the story. (which is what that line points out) The truth is not always easy to hear.

reply

Exactly. The final line is exactly the kind of media response that would come up in response to his allegations. I can see certain media figures scrambling for ways to discredit him, and calling him an illegal alien, based on his having been cloned outside the country, is one possible, if silly, way he might be attacked.

I liked the two final lines being used to sum up the ending. It let us know what Sam would do very briefly, and with some humour.

Tell me the truth. Are we still in the game?

its a bit like mark wahlberg crashing at the end of planet of the apes then he's surrounded by ape cops

Uh....oh,oh, it's the pancakes! You don't like pancakes, I will get you somethin else!

reply

Only a dumbazz would get upset over this.

Simple really. If the lifeform we know to be a clone of Sam was born on The Moon, is he even an Earthling?

He most definitely NOT a citizen of Earth, but instead an illegal copy of one.

Next question.

Enjoy these words, for one day they'll be gone... All of them.

Lots of media only work for certain political parties, and only give their point of view. Like how the Murdoch media Sky News is a Conservative Party political propaganda channel, or how the Telegraph is known as the Torygraph.

Have you read the comments on a news media outlet's facebook page? If you ever had any doubt about the colossal stupidity and ignorance of big chunks of the population, you'll be reassured there.

...then whoa, differences...

Wrong it was perfect. It captured the madness of human society. Hello. The movie was made in 2009 here we are in almost 2016 with the Trump wanting to build walls and lockout Muslims. From a country that had 300 mass shootings during 2015 of which over 95% were carried out by White Christian gun lovin' American born American males.

reply

Mass Shootings: It's the Christian thing to do.
Suicide Bombings: It's the Islamic thing to do.

Yet somehow the least of the two threats is called Terrorism, while the other one just gets ignored/waved off, or even gets supported by politicians who love guns.

Gotta love the duality of mankind. Moon.. you make more sense every minute.

It's part of the misinformation that the energy corporation that he worked for (can't remember the name of it) would broadcast in order to discredit his story. Kinda like the big oil companies do in real life to discredit climate change.

reply

I think by meaning of whacko it was his mannerism, Sam has just 3 years of life so he was probably not wasting time nor kissing butts on earth before his body broke down.....I can see him being judged a wacko

and illegal immigrant may have been assigned to him properly by the coporation.... given that he isn't American but rather a human clone from the moon, he basically enters the US like one enters from mexico just aboard a spacecraft
