Pretty meek effort to defend themselves

Why did they just do the same thing night after night? After it was established that she was really being hunted by a demon then why on earth did they just sleep in the bed totally unprotected with the door open every night? How about trying a few things like....

1) Maybe use a bear trap. It's a physical creature so there's no reason to think it wouldn't work. If it can hold bears then it should be able to hold a demon. Once trapped, hit it short range with a shotgun.

Or...

2) Move house. Yes it is established that it follows her, but can it follow overseas? Move to Europe. It appears to be a physical creature albeit invisible, so by the time it knows you're gone for good you're already half way across the world. It may have some magical sense and know where you are, but it would still take weeks to get back to you. Just move around every few weeks.

Or

3) Close the door and lock it. Whoa. If nothing else it will at least wake you up trying to get in so you can go out the window.

Or

4) You have video proof of a hostile species never seen before. Go show it to the media. Someone out there may have an idea how to kill it.

Or

5) Buy a pack of dogs. You've got some nasty demon attacking you. See how it goes against a group of big ass dogs.

How old are you?

I thought that was one of the least believable things about the movie. It seemed that Micah wanted to be macho and try to get rid of the demon himself, thereby protecting his girlfriend. If only he didn't have such a big ego, he could have been more serious about contacting an expert who could help them, which is what Katie wanted.

I laughed at the bear trap idea. I just got this image in my head of them putting hundreds of bear traps around the house, like that scene in Mousehunt where they filled the kitchen with literally hundreds of mouse traps.

Anyway chances are none of that would have worked but they should definitely have tried SOMETHING more than they did. If it were me, i'd have gone overseas. If that didn't work, take refuge in a church. It seemed pretty clear that the characters were atheists but a priest or a church would have been at least worth a TRY, more than Micah running around the house yelling challenges at the thing.

I totally dig the bear trap idea. Does anyone remember what the white stuff was that Micah used? Was it salt or chalk, because in some mythologies salt is harmful to demons.
Anyway the behaviour of the characters is so unbelieveable in this movie. Not closing the door on one hand, Kathie sleeping on the door side on the other hand and so on.

He used baby powder. He was trying to *prove* the existence of the demon by seeing if it left footprints.
God forbid Micah-the-Dickah did some basic RESEARCH & found that salt often repels demons.

I don’t think the demon is a physical being. I think it is more like a will power thing can able to possess and at the same time using mental strength to move things around. Obviously it is not a similar type power as telekinetic ability but some sort of spiritual work so it cannot really be trapped or physical traps will just go through it but it can put force on things.

Therefore, I believe:
1. it should be able to go through walls but it decide to preserve the power not to use it.
2. According to above, it cannot be trapped.
3. It is spiritual so it should be able to follow you to the moon.
I think asking media to see how to deal with it is a good idea but Micah thought it was crazy to call the professor so I really doubt that he would ask the whole public how to deal with this.

I do believe there is a host to perform this ‘spell’ to serve the purpose. In later sequels with the cult groups, I think it supports my suggestion or anything else does not make sense. Hence the best way to deal with this is to destroy the whole cult group (possessed human?) somehow.

The demon appears to have a certain amount of control over Katie even at the mid point of the movie before it actually possesses her. Making her get up and staring at Micah then going outside. Something she claims she never remembered doing. Maybe it had some control over Micah as well. It seems to want to toy with them first before it's final act. Maybe demons need entertainment also. I think in the case of the first movie we are not watching two independently thinking individuals.

If you notice the demon is sending signals to the doctor to GTFO as soon as he walks in. "He doesn't want me here". The Dr is able to notice that more than Katie and Micah. It's my belief he is also sending signals to them to stay.

It wasn't entertainment as much as it was 'gaining power'. In just about every film or story I've read about demons, they often don't (or are not able to) possess or attack completely right away. It takes time, and during this time they gain strength & power from their victims anger & fear.
The shrink in this film also makes mention of this, that the more they react to the demon the stronger it gets.

A good example of this was shown in "The Exorcist". The first stage of possession is called obsession. This is where the demon attacks the people indirectly.
It infests the house, moving furniture, moving/stealing objects, pounding on walls.
Scratching sounds or footsteps may also be heard, even whispers or voices.
The next stage is possession of the human target.

Micah was such a control freak making Katie promise she wouldn't call the demonologist, and she, in turn, agreed, even though he went against everything she asked of him, i.e. Ouija Board, camera.

I think also there might have been another demonologist they could have called since the other one was "busy". It was pointless of them to call that psychic/ghost hunter back since he pointedly told them he couldn't help them the first time.
