Thought they would see Mary Ellen again

I thought they would bump into her on the trail. Just me?

Such an obnoxious character, but brought life and energy to the film.

reply

Agreed. It seemed too easy that they managed to ditch her.

reply

Yes, in the book, she keeps turning up again and again, just when they thought they had ditched her. One of the funniest parts of the book.

reply

I thought they would see her again, and I kind of wish they had. I expected her to peer over the edge of their hiding place and say something like "Hi there!" Maybe she was annoying to them, but I wanted more Kristen Schall! She was totally adorable in this movie, like when she was singing "Get Lucky" in the middle of the night.

Haha yeah, in the book I think Katz just said that so he could eat Bryson's pie :p

that's cool i'll have to read the book

her singing "get lucky" in the movie was amazing

reply

Yeah, it felt kind of unfinished that they didn't see her again. Also, while this wasn't true of the book, considering they were two out of shape guys in their 70s and she was a fit woman in her 30s, it would have made more sense for them to lose her by falling behind than getting ahead. It seemed like she'd easily have caught back up.

And yeah, she is so FUNNY! I loved her on Last Man on Earth, where she plays a sweeter version of this annoying character and on 30 Rock, where she played a more evil one.

AGreed! She was funny and the FIRST one (in the movie, have't read the book yet!) that the two met up with on their hike!!!!!!!!!!!!  VERY adorable..

Amanda Bynes is hot and Lindsay Lohan is not.

I also expected her to show up again..

I enjoyed this..

reply

It's been a while since I read the book but I don't remember her featuring that prominently after they ditch her. If I remember correctly Bryson even finds out from other hikers that she eventually gave up long before him and Katz did.

reply

I don't get why some people think she was funny. I found her really annoying. The word "chatterbox" comes to mind. She kept saying a lot of other hikers were boring, when it's a textbook example of the pot calling the kettle black. I'm glad the film didn't show our heroes repeatedly bumping into her. Once is enough.

Yes, she was a riot! I would have loved to see her again!!!

Wait! Wait! Where are you going? I was gonna make Espresso!

reply

Agreed. She was more entertaining than the old stars of the movie. Even the notion that they could lose her--these two almost 80 year olds--shows them to be as dumb and boring as she accused them of! Much easier: Get off the trail and let her pass. After all, they seem to prefer motels and K-Mart to hiking.

reply

LOL! Yes!!!!!

Her more enterianing than Redford or Nolte? Heck no lol.

She did do a great job being extremly annoying as hell though. She brought life to a cliched role but she did too good of a job and was very annoying.

That being said I wouldn't have minded seeing her again; even for a few seconds at the end. She deserved to get some commupance for being so annoying. That book part mentioned earlier would have been perfect if yet odd.

Thought Mary Ellen was one of the best/worst elements in the movie. Sure she's playing a stereotype character (same one Kristen Schaal always does) but it's quite hilariously realistic, thinking you have Mother Nature all to yourself and then being saddled with a blabbermouth self-unaware nerd and having to ultimately shake her off.
