shareYears ago I met a girl from the Dallas suburbs and was surprised she did not have an accent. She said only rednecks had Texas accents. I think she took pride in not having a Texas accent because she was a gothic chick.
shareIt's true that the only people with "southern" accents as depicted by media are rednecks, farmers, basically people isolated from cities. Small towns and country sides are where most people with heavy accents come from. Not all, but most. The big cities, like Dallas, don't have that thick of accents. And it depends on the person. My mom has a slight accent, her sister has a thick accent, and their brother has no accent.
shareNot everyone who lives in southern states has a southern accent. It's not like you can't control how "hick" you talk.
