Why was the mother the only one with a southern accent?

Considering it takes place in Texas, shouldn't the people have Texas/Southern accents. Also why would the mom have an accent when the rest of her family doesn't?

reply

Because not everyone in Texas or the South have southern accents. I'm a native Texan and don't have accent.

It's generational. Older generation, before 24x7 television , movies, it was more common to grow up with and keep regional accents and dialects.

It's almost like immigrant parents keep a foreign accent, but their kids speak 'standard' American, whatever that is

First its a film and but yet agreed, then again the southern accent is so cliche in hollywood its sickining and sad! Now Ellen did a pretty good slight southern accent in An American Crime but southern accent isnt really out in Oklahoma or wherever it was suppose to be. I have been to TXs and there is a southern accent but not real southern in my opinion, neither is VA which is at the Masion Dixin Line. I myself I am on the coast in around FL GA SC and that is real southern and well accent differs in each state also. But to me my mom has a southern accent but not as much as others, I have worked so hard at not sounding southern just some words but back to the mom thing I could see how the mom had the accent rather Bliss-Bliss wanted out.

It's too bad that she didn't put an accent on for this movie because it might have made people realize that there's more to her as an actress.

I am from New Orleans, which is in the south and the accent down here is like a slower version of the New York accent. We do not have the Southern accent. But if you drive two hours into Mississippi, you have them speaking with a Southern accent.

It is a general rule in movies that only one minor/supporting character has the correct accent.

The answer you're looking for is this: because Marcia Gay Harden, who plays the mother, comes from a family of Texans, and lived here for a time. The others do not. There ya go.

Maybe the mother was from a rural area and/or had limited education.

I'm also from south Texas. And I think it's weird when I watch movies and characters from Austin or San Antonio have a southern accent. I honestly don't know anybody that was born here that talks with one. In northern/east Texas, that's a different story.

Last movies seen:
Hangover Part 3 - 4/10
Fast and Furious 6 - 7/10

I stayed in Austin, Texas for a month and a half in 2009..and every person I met down there didn't have the stereotypical southern accent. I'm from Oklahoma myself..and don't have one, either.
