why did this film flop?

what went wrong?

No idea, to me it was a GREAT movie I loved the acting, dialogue and narrative. Gyllenhaal tends to make a couple movies that don't get the praise they should; same with the movie Enemy!

BTW, some folks might consider some of the details below as spoilers.

By the end, I was glad I had watched it, but the first 20-25 min felt like an hour. I couldn't believe how little time had passed.

I think it picked up steam for me when Davis met Chris, who was not only a complex and interesting character, but I think made the Davis character get more engaged with himself and
with life.

I felt For Phil, who had so much grief, yet no one he seemed able to share it with. It seemed like he wanted and needed to share it with Davis, but Davis was so deep into his own grievous shock that he couldn't be there for himself, let alone Phil.

All these characters are perhaps flawed people as are we all, but also deeply damaged for their own reasons.

In a way, the guy you can feel sorriest for is Carl, the concession company owner. He was perhaps the emotionally healthiest person in the story caught among all these damaged, grieving, confused characters. He is probably much better off on his own.

I will say that why the kid was watching Davis with the binoculars and the F-you in the letter (a jibe about using the word
correctly?) confuses me. No clue To that stuff.

I would have liked a more neatly resolved ending, but I think the dots are there to be connected.

It was bleak and very dry, like a Leonard Cohen song.

Maybe cause it sucked.

Hear, hear!!!

1) It came out the same week as THE BOSS, so it had a lot of competition (not even mentioning the movies that were already out).
2) It received a limited release.
3) It didn't have much advertising.
4) It had mixed to negative reviews.

good question, i thought it was a damn fine movie, and it was funny as well.

reply

That is a very good question. The more I think of the film, the more I love it. I just watched it and will definitely be telling everyone to see it.

reply

Why did it flop? Did you watch it? It was a boring piece of crap from beginning to end. The question should be why was it made in the first place.

go watch captain america and stay away from gems like this.

reply

This is the first i've ever heard of it.
