A Grim Darn Shame..

Partner (copy of 'Hitch') Bicchoo (copy of 'Leon') Sarkar (The Godfather) (atleast RGV gave credit to original) De Dhakka (copy of 'Little Miss Sunshine')
I stopped watching Hindi movies a decade ago precisely due to the recycled garbage that is fed to their target audience (Indians with minimal to no exposure to films outside of Bollywood). I have accepted the fact that 95% of movies out of Bollywood will be made with the lowest common denominator in India as the target demographic. Heck, most of Hollywood movies are horrible too, may be 10% a worthy of our time. Most a just big budget CGI everywhere crap, very few rely on great storytelling or direction/acting. Every year may be 10-12 good movies come out of Hollywood (out of 100s). I have not watched many of the movies you listed above but I have seen Darr and it is not based on Fatal Attraction but rather a loosely based remake of Cape Fear.
Naming a few HOLLYWOOD movies that you may/may not have seen doesn't make you superior at all...
The four BOLLYWOOD movies that you named up there are all non-commercial movies that have something to do with violence or terrorist attacks. WEDNESDAY was a great movie and it would be unfair if Naseeruddin Shah doesn't get awarded by the critics..But have you ever tried to find out the BOX OFFICE Collction for that movie...Such movies are for class audience...and one needs to have a peaceful mind to watch such kinda movies...
Now what about the lot that hardly gets time to hang out as they are busy earning their bread...And the only thing they want to do is do something that makes them smile...So what do youo think they would go for??
WEDNESDAY or GHAJINI??
Make your own likes and dislikes...but its absolutely incorrect to provoke someone to adapt your likes and dislikes... AND no matter how much ever you make your posts here...movies like GHAJINI would always do better business than non-commercial cinema....
so, it's ok for Hollywood to remake and copy foreign movies but not ok for foreign movies to copy Hollywood? damn I'm still waiting for the failure of OldBoy remake, why whould anyone try to remake that movie... i agree, movie wasn't so good but to rant about copying? btw, the death scene made me cry like a baby, to see the women you love killed in fron of you... damn, my favourite part also, the music was awesome (sorry for my bad english)
if you don't like, then don't watch it. there's a market for it in india, and it's just business, and they are taking the risk of getting sued. people have been sued before and they still take the risk because they know they'll make enough money.
so if you don't like it, don't watch it, simple as that, stop being such an immature brat and crying about it.
how do you critique a movie without SEEING IT? you have no idea what happens in ghajini... ghajini and memento barely have anything in common except the fact that the main character has anterograde amnesia!! before you comment on a movie...WATCH IT FIRST!!!!!!!!!!!!! and o yeah...look up the meaning of "copy" and "plagiarism" the next time you use them...
pitviper, you have to think about the audience for each film. Ghajini wouldn't make as much money if it were more intellectual. Comparing it to other hindi movies, I would say that it was much more intelligent, but you can't compare Bollywood to Hollywood. It HAS to be "bollywood-ized" in order for it to even have a chance at the box office over in India.
pitviper, thank you actually making counter points instead of just going off the wall.
How good Ghajini was is completely subjective. You thought it was bad, but I thought it was a great movie for what it was. If you compare it to Memento, then obviously its gonna seem like a bad movie (hell, pretty much any movie would seem bad next to Memento, its number 27 here on IMDB). But Ghajini isn't supposed to be Memento, it has a completely different story which follows the same premise.
I dont think it would be as bad if the producers/director/whoever owned up to it and admit that the stories are "inspired".
Aamir has in his blog. He actually made 2 posts on his blog talking about it.

PITVIPER...i understand those are similarities...but i'm actually talking about the main storyline....yeah theyr both taking revenge on their wife/fiance's death...but if you've seen both the movies...there's no way you can say ghajini is a "copy"....
it doesn't require as much intelligence to understand ghajini as it does memento...but that clearly doesnt make ghajini unininteligent and stupid...
it doesn't require as much intelligence to understand ghajini as it does for memento...but that clearly doesnt make ghajini unininteligent and stupid...
Well said... And if you overlook Memento for once while watching Ghajini...Ghajini does keep the audience glued to their seats as for our BOLLYWOOD you ccan simply guess the ending and so it is with this movie...But the way the story was told is absolutely different from what we've seen so far...
AND talking about MEMENTO, the movie ends at the previous scene from where it started....It is totally an inversion and one has to really scratch their head to get it...I understood Memento only after i saw it for the 2nd time...Hats off to the screenplay...
But dont you think some things should be left uncompared...
so when tarantino does it is homage and when an indian director is inspired by a central plot and sparingly uses certain elements of it is plagiarism/ripoff is it? fu
well there are so many: Koi mil gaya from E.T. Sarkar from Godfather Agneepath from Scarface Ek Ajnabee from man on fire God Tussi Great Ho from bruce almighty Darr from Cape Fear Ghajini from Memento i dunno the name of the movie but it had dimple kapadia and amitabh bachchan in it and it was an exact copy of The Others Hum Tum from When Harry met sally Kaante from Reservoir dogs and the list goes on... this just goes to show how pathetic our glorified scriptwriters are while there are some real good low budget films which are excellent but not appreciated by the indian fans. For eg: A Wednesday by neeraj pandey, Mumbai meri jaan by Nishikanth kamath, parzania, dasvidaniya, the last lear, Manthan and other movies.
Amitabh Bachchan, Amir Khan and Shahrukh Khan are considered as being the best actors while Naseeruddin Shah (whom i repect and believe to be the greates actor India has produced)is sidelined because he does theater more than films. Preity Zinta, Priyanka Chopra, Rani mukherjee are considered great while Tabu is sidelined. I find brilliance in actors like Irrfan Khan, Tabu, Naseeruddin Shah, K.K. Menon, Nana patekar, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil etc.
Currently people only judge actors based on their marketing skills. Those who hype themselves and promote themselves and are always in the headlines are considered to be the greatest, while the real artistes fall behind.
adding some more in the list..can rent or watch them if they come in tv to verify it... zeher-out of time u me aur hum-the notebook Main Aisa Hi Hoon-I am Sam Deewane Huye Paagal-theres something about mary murder-unfaithful dance like a man- billy elliot(ish not entirely) then please in Krishh ,there is a direct rip of of the scene in superman (the first one with christopher reeve) where he is catching up with the bus where the girls are waving.
You knw wat just go n drown yourself ok!! GHAJINI is the BEST MOVIE SINCE THE LAST 15 YRS n maybe you dont have the sense to watch a film so maybe you should go n put your head in a a barrel of. . .
But, you have to understand that in India, directors are total sell-outs. Most of them at least. All that they are worried about is box office collections and sometimes intentionally add "masala" to the movies that they are ripping off.
Movies are going to be ripped off from Hollywood - always has been and always will be. Our laws are too weak and scrupulous directors aware of the fact will exploit it...Gotta deal with it!!
Do what I did... to every person that i have met who applauds this movie, I immediately tell them to go watch Memento. Chances are that they will still like Ghajini more, but you at least have the gratification of getting your point out. It's not a solution, but you must find some solace in it.
And regarding the various posters here praising Ghajini, I am not judging you in anyway, but please don't negate the greatness of Memento. It is a great movie, and will always be. Purely speaking, you simply cannot compare Ghajini to Memento. The target while making the two movies are very different. While memento was made out of the passion of the story and the need to make it, Ghajini was made with the intention of enlightening this brilliant story to the millions of people of our country - in a way that they will find it interesting; and of course, to make money - lots of it!!!
Finally, giving this movie a 7 on 10 is ridiculous. Since 85% of the movie is borrowed from elsewhere, how can you rate it? I hope IMDB introduces a different rating system for our desi movies!!
And, what the heck was Asin needed in this movie for? She was an utter waste of time and the movie makers could have done without her. The first thing that comes to my mind is glam value, which I am pretty sure was the primary reason for casting her.
Before you start flaming me, this is my opinion. Everyone is entitled to have one. I am not forcing my thoughts on you, just merely sharing it...
The problem with USA is that people here feel some sort of entitlement. Most if not all feel proud and patriotic and do not and can not accept the fact that out of 140+ countries hollywood is not the only place that produces movies. They wine about things like plagiarism when every single tv show on US television has been stolen from overseas. They cry about remakes and while some outcries are justified as with case of crappy planet of the apes, many of so called issues are based from the heart and not from the mind. Every single country produces movies and most movies were produced for target audience of that country. What appeals to american consumer may be considered absolutely pathetic elsewhere. What appeals to lets say vietnam may seem an absolute garbage to american people. There is only one compromise. Apparently its ok if american director makes a movie about india and suddenly its all over tabloids (cough cough slumdog millionaire).
In all seriousness this movie has gotten a 10/10 by my standards and I am a very fussy movie viewer. I think I have given 10 to only a few movies. This movie got a 10 even after I watched memento, even after I read on the back of the dvd that this movie was inspired by memento, even after I saw similarities between memento and this movie. This movie deserves a 10 for many reasons. #1 it appeals to men. There are things dying and fists flying and blood squirting and at the same time #2 it appeals to women because of girly romance. You do not get to see many movies that would appeal to both sexes. This movie deserves a 10 for phenomenal camera work, much missed in many movies. Quality of shots was astounding providing this was not made by billionaire dollar movie companies. This movie deserves a 10 because in 3 hours you feel pumped up, emotional and you get to laugh. In the span of 3 hours story makes sense and I find it particularly interesting that they made a movie like memento within another movie about memento. 3rd party narrative added a definite spice to the overall package.
Like someone mentioned here. If you can find a person who liked this movie, you send them over to memento and they will like it too. Don't even for a minute think that every single person has watched every single movie ever made and remembers it in great detail. Just learn to appreciate movies for what they are. You will feel better about yourself and enjoy your life more.
It's not just Bollywood, but Hollywood has also been continuously copying foreign movies for decades, like for example...

Hollywood version - Chinese original Reservoir Dogs - City on Fire Desperado - The Killer The Departed - Infernal Affairs Tortilla Soup - Eat Drink Man Woman
Hollywood version - Korean original My Sassy Girl - Yeopgijeogin Geunyeo The Lake House - Il Mare The Uninvited - A Tale of Two Sisters
Hollywood version - Other original Vanilla Sky - Open Your Eyes (Spanish) City of Angels - Wings of Desire (German) Insomnia - Insomnia (Norway) Brothers - Brodre (Danish) Swept Away - Swept Away by an Unusual Destiny (Italy) Let Me In - Let the Right One In (Swedish)
The movie "Vanilla Sky" was made, after buying the story rights from the makers of "Open Your Eyes". Unlike "Ghajini" where the producer/director did not pay a penny to the makers of Memento for the story rights & Go around the town claiming that it is a original. To top it all, the the star actor even claims that his movie is better than Memento.
Vanilla Sky is a remake of Open Your Eyes, so they obviously had to buy the rights for it. On the other hand, Ghajini is not a remake of Memento, hence why they didn't have to buy any rights or pay any royalties. Aamir Khan did give credit to Memento as a major influence on the original Tamil version, but that doesn't make it a remake (a term that's used too loosely around here).
I haven't seen the original Tamil version of Ghajini, so I'm not sure how similar it is to Memento, but I have seen the Hindi remake of Ghajini and found its similarities to Memento to be rather superficial. If anything, Ghajini has more in common with the 1994 Indian film Criminal than it does with Memento.
Ghajini borrows plenty of ideas from Memento, but it uses those concepts to tell its own story, in the same way Inception (by Memento's director Christopher Nolan) borrows a lot of ideas from the Japanese anime film Paprika (by the late Satoshi Kon) to tell its own story, or how The Matrix borrowed a lot of ideas from the Japanese anime films Megazone 23 and Ghost in the Shell to tell its own story.
You need to understand that inspiration and remake are not the same thing. Considering how these past few years, several Hollywood studios have been suing Bollywood studios that have been making unauthorized remakes, the fact that no such action was ever taken against Ghajini, even though it grossed more than Memento did, speaks for itself.
I was just giving a counter-example for your list earlier. How Vanilla sky is not plagiarism. But a legal remake. Totally unlike Ghajini.
And please stop saying inspiration... Especially, When the Director and leading actor say, that the they never saw Memento and he wrote this film independently. It's just pure coincidences if there are any similarities.
You can given a counter-example by providing proof where the leading actor / director claim that they have seen memento and have been inspired by it while writing Ghajini. At least that would be 50% honesty.
Again, please don't give examples of Japanese films, American films to prove that Ghajini team did not plagiarize from Memento without even acknowledging the inspiration, forget about paying them the money. That would not prove the innocence or honesty of Ghajini team.
It's perfectly ok as long as they give credit to the original film, director/writer etc. The problem is securing the rights to the story. However, it's better than simply doing a ripoff, not giving proper credit and then potentiall getting sued for plagiarism. Remakes happen all the time, but without proper credit given, it's a ripoff not a remake.
