Barcelona

Barcelona is lovely and beautiful, but this city's beauty is hidden in its multicultural culture.
Of course there is prostitution, illegal immigrants, misery and drug abuse.
Take a walk in downtown Raval late at night.

I did not find out it was set in Barcelona until the shot with the view over the city, when you can see the Sagrada Familia. I thought it was Mecico too, because it was so raw and gritty. Biutiful film.

i had to check where the film is located in the middle of the movie .. got so confused .. thought the movie is located in mexico because its a mexican movie .. and i saw FCB symbol in the wall .. as his socks have RCD Espanyol symbol ..so many things confused me .. i googled the location to be sure its in barcelona ..

Cool I was wondering what city it was set in. Barcelona is where my grandma's from and I can't wait to go there someday.

Though the dialog was in Spanish, I could see that another language was appearing on the signs. Policia without any accent marks is Catalán. It's Policía in Spanish. I didn't have an idea of where it was filmed until I saw those differences.

That's one of the strengths of the movie, to change your preconceptions about a place. Here we have the dark side of Barcelona, not the tourist cosmopolitan Woody Allen-ish side. Any place is different for all kinds of people, for American foreigners, Barcelona is a cosmopolitan posh European city, for illegal immigrants it's close to hell.

I just saw this amazing film today and as I watched I kept thinking this film is about Poverty. I'm sure a similar version of it could have been set in any number of cities in the world. The fact that it's set in Barcelona helped to give it some of its specific flavors.
