My favorite thing about this thread is the hypocrisy by the right-wingers. They love to blast liberals for "hating" America, simply because of criticism of our Government and country, yet how many conservatives attack Obama on a daily basis? We cannot criticize Bush because that would be un-patriotic! but Obama, well he is a socialist and black, or whatever the reason....so he is fair game. total hypocrisy! Conservatives have no right to call anybody else un-American, un-patriotic or America hating....as long as they criticize Obama the way they do. You cannot be so nasty, and ignorant and think you are being patriotic under your definition of non-questioning. I personally think it is alright to question, it just has to be done with common sense and lack of ignorance, not things the tea-partiers seem to care about.

as for all of the marxist and socialist comments HHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
do any of you actually know what these things are, and how they are very different? or are you just ignorant to definitions and just make up your own to fit your crazy views?

It's absolutely true that Howard Zinn was a self-described "Socialist Anarchist", though he was never a card-carrying member of any party. And... so what? People that use Socialist as a derogative (Fox News viewers), as you said, don't understand it. They use it like Communist was used back in the day as a description of pure evil or something - I honestly don't understand the psychological phenomenon. That even with all this information at our disposal people still think in such black and white terms - we're living in strange times indeed.

Anyways, here are some fun facts about Socialism you may not know.

-Socialism is primarily an economic theory. It is fully possible, and better, to have democratic or republic society that is also Socialist in nature.

-The Socialist party (which still exists) is a legitimate party, like Democrat, Republican, Green, etc. which has had significant influence throughout our history. In the early decades of the 20th Century, the socialist party was an active voice in the anti-war movement, and the Labor movement. We have them to thank for all the workers rights we acheived during those times.

-Finally, no society in modern history is wholly Socialist or wholly Capitalist - they all lie somewhere in the gray area in between - we all have some mixture of free markets and state intervention, and we need to find the right balance between the two so that consumers' rights and corporate rights are both fairly protected.

I'm not Socialist - I'm not anything. I'm rational, and think for myself. Just laying out some information for you nutcases out there who need to caaaaalm dooown and understand the people who disagree aren't evil, you just need to compromise with them in a democratic society such as ours.
