Two things that bother me about the 'Beauty and the Beast' story

1. As others have mentioned, it's typical to see an attractive female lead fall in love with the unattractive male lead, yet the roles are hardly ever switched. Probably because the film industry is male dominated and they don't believe audiences would believe an attractive male falling for an unattractive female.

2. I don't necessarily like how the "beast" has a deadline to have someone fall in love with them by that time. It makes it seem like he doesn't genuinely care about the girl and is simply using her so he can become beautiful again. And given the short amount of time that he did have, it's unlikely he would have actually fallen in love with her (or her to him) in such a short duration anyway. And muttering the words "I love you" doesn't MEAN they actually do.

I'm just being cynical but that's my two cents.

"A family. Nothing else matters...it's mom, hide!"

A Walk to Remember. Granted, she wasn't ugly, but she was the nerdy, unpopular girl.

I think the time limit is there to eventually test whatever Beast there is. What normally happens is that the Beast in question has the opportunity to be selfish or selfless. The fact that he has a time limit at stake usually proves whether or not he truly loves the Beauty. In the Disney version he sets her free to find her father. That act usually proves that he has learned to love. Essentially he puts the Beauty's needs and feelings above his own

The ugly girl, good looking guy stories do exist but it's always with a "Hollywood Ugly" girl. An attractive actress who's just given glasses, bad hair and unflattering clothes and put under bad lighting. Shrek might be a unique example since the princess turns into an Ogre every night and assumes that form by the end

I'm gonna die of long hair!
