Gerard Butler's looks

This is the first film I've seen Gerard Butler in, and I was interested to notice that, depending on the angle, I'd either think "Wow, that guy is amazingly good-looking!" or, at a different angle, "Ehh, he's really ordinary-looking - what's he doing as the leading man in a romantic comedy?" This went on throughout the film. Did anyone else have this reaction?

reply

Yeah...it was weird. I think maybe he was hungover in a lot the scenes or something. Like sometimes he just looks like every other puffy Scotsman, and sometimes he's raging hot.

He looks pretty bad in The Bounty Hunter too.

reply

I agree with the differing angles in the Ugly Truth. I thought the same thing too. I didn't think the smiley picture of Gerard on the back of the DVD attractive either.

However, I have to disagree about the Bounty Hunter. Maybe not his best ever, but good enough for me to appreciate him ;)

reply

Yes, I agree; it's not just you. Some guys (and women) are what we used to call "beautiful-ugly" (or the reverse?) to describe attractive people who don't conform to usual standards of features and symmetry of beauty -- for instance, Jean Paul Belmondo. Butler, can look quite handsome, depending on angle and lighting, the lens, etc., but occasionally he just looks near-to plug-ugly, but never un-sexy.

reply

ummmm mlumiere you conridict urself that other person said he looks hot or ordinary looking... uve said beautiful-ugly???? she didnt say he was ugly she said normal looking so im confused here..... i think he is average to quite goodlooking... and im a straight guy...hence why she said ordinary and not ugly as they r two different meanings

reply

btw nobody is perfect

reply

Ehh, he's really ordinary-looking - what's he doing as the leading man in a romantic comedy?

That's pretty shallow.

I can point to a number of RomCom leading ladies that I don't find particularly attractive, but it never occurs to me that they shouldn't be in the role...

He definitely looked a bit puffy in the face in a lot of scenes. I was watching the director's commentary and he said Gerry was suffering from a severe sinus infection; so that explains the puffiness.

Renee Zellwegger...Helen Hunt, and even Meg Ryan. On the best day of their life, they were never any better than a plain jane, but somehow they are leads in romantic comedies. Goes to show these movies are geared towards women. Otehrwise, Kristina Hendricks would be the lead female in every romcom ever.

Heigl is hot however. Not Hendricks hot, but hot.

reply

Fully agree with you there. I cant believe this thread even exists. Just goes to show how hypocritical most of us actually are, a celeb goes under the knife and they are plastic, if they dont they are not hot enough. its a *beep* rom-com, not a beauty contest!

rant over. goody day everyone. :)

just noticed they replaced my swear word with a beep :(

The following isn't directed at you individually... just a favorite rant.

It is extremely shocking to see someone break the Hollywood mold by looking like an actual human, not a gorgeous, camera-pleasing, demi-god/goddess who has, if required, had the required procedures to insure popularity. Gerard Butler is a handsome man but has jeopardized his career by turning 40 without getting little scars behind his ears. It wasn't until half-way through the Bounty Hunter I realized Jennifer Aniston WAS NOT wearing a Michael Myers' mask with lips.

Where will it end?

In the early years of film [like up to 2010+] men (and women...) who looked like Gerard Butler were shot only from flattering angles. Ever heard of a "screen test?" If you don't look good on film you'll be lucky to be a supporting actor or a character actor and leave leading roles to modern Oliviers like Keanu Reeves.

Beauty is in the eye of those who can see it.

Cheers!

I want to see incredibly good looking men in movies- and character actors on the side for interest.
If I wanted to look at a puffy faced, unshaven guy in a tee shirt all I got to do is roll over.

No one is stopping you. There are tons of crappy movies to suit your taste.

I think Gerry Butler is an attractive man.
I see many celebrities that look like they're drunk or high most of the time (eheem, Robert Pattinson), but GB is not one of them.
Also, from interviews and other tv spots he seems like a really nice guy.

Watch him in Phantom of the Opera, you'd be lying if you say you'd choose the flippy haired french guy over him.

Lol alas alas....He definitely was hotter in Phantom of the Opera, however the irony of that and what you said above is just unbearable! (The Phantom is supposed to be hideous. That's pretty much a, if not the, defining characteristic of the character.) It's not Butler's fault though of course.

LOL! We need more saucy comments from women on IMDb!

Well kathie, you win the award for the most shallow comment of the month. And let's remember, you chose the puffy faced unshaven guy to spend your life with. You don't like it, get rid of him. I have a funny feeling he's not that thrilled with what he sees when he rolls over either.

reply

I agree- I think he eats too many carbs (maybe beer drinker?) His face look puffy compared to other movies of his, and his 'beard' is zero attractive.
I thot he was hot in P.S. I Love You and in 300? fagedaboudit, he was gorgeous.
He needed to lose about 20 lbs for this movie and he would have been hot.

reply

I think Gerrys gorgeous and yeah he looked puffy in this but as one of the other posters have pointed out he had a bad sinus infection and that will make anyone look puffy or swollen and I really don't think he needed to lose 20lbs, as for the beard I tend to like the scruffy look most of the time although I think his beard in this may have been a rather bad attempt at trying to hide the fact his face was swollen due to the sinus infection.

I rather like him! I still can't get over he was the younger brother in "Her Majesty Mrs. Brown."

I think that one of the main points of the movie is that Mike Chadway is not your gorgeous hunk of a man. You had the perfect man speciman of Colon to play off the dumpy scruffy Mike Chadway. It would not have worked for example if those roles were switched and Colon was the shock jock and Mike was the surgeon.

Gerard Butler is looking rather lean these days.

I personally find Gerard Butler to be VERY good looking. I love that scruffy, rugged look.

He used to be hot in the late 90's, early 00's. Like someone said..too much beer and carbs..you can see it all in his face. He's still a good looking guy; just needs to work out more and drop a few.

I'm sick of followin' my dreams; I'll just ask them where they're goin' & hook up with 'em later.

reply

You people do need to realize Butler's in his 40s AND male as well. Attractive men do not 'have to' look "beautiful" all the time, and as someone has already said, it depends on the angle of the camera.

The vast majority of good-looking people do not look perfect at all times, but still looks good enough to be called "attractive". There's very few Hollywood celebrities who look hot no matter what (Megan Fox, Jessica Alba), but it all depends.

If you consider yourself attractive, try filming yourself with a camera. If you're male and don't look like the next Brad Pitt/Johnny Depp, you'll notice you look better and worse in particular angles and lightning. It's completely normal.

I thought he looked amazing in the 500 makeup and afterward. In the movie with hilary swank he was handsome. However in Ugly Truth he looks bloated and overweight It was still a good movie. I thinkhe must drink a lot thats what he looks like and not enought sleep.

reply

I've been sitting here defending him all movie b.c he looks gorgeous but especially in the Latin Dance Restaurant, he's completely bloated like he just ate shellfish. I'd believe the sinus infection or the bungover theory.

Yeah... he looked drunk and dull in this movie though he acted amazingly like his all other movies. But this particular movie, he didn't focus on his looks! Look at him in Phantom of the opera or P.S I Love you , you will go crazy about his looks. He is a handsome guy. Love his versatile roles!
