Joseph -- the angel of God's wrath -- gave Summer the photo of her son and his eyes were not crossed out, like the other photos of dead people on his wall, which implied that the boy was alive and well. While the angel said Summer had a good heart, she was guilty of apathy in regards to Clark's molestation of her son. The guilt was so great that she naturally wanted to kill herself, but was unable to do so because it turned out there were no bullets in the revolver. This suggested that divine mercy was extended to Summer after learning not to foolishly trust someone in the name of love and turning a blind eye to glaring evil.
Besides, what good would it be for the her son -- who's alive -- if his mother was going to judged and wiped off the face of the Earth?
