Help! I didn't understand the ending. Was it Mal or was it everyone - just a serious of unfortunate, accidental occurrences?? Why did Mal want the panic button key??

reply

Mal wanted the key to turn off the alarm and so she couldn't reset the panic button to set off the alarm again.

I think it was a mix of her paranoia going cold turkey off her meds. Mal and his obsession with isolating her for himself. He broke into her house the first time to scare her and make her need him. Plus it seemed her fear turned him on. I think Mal was a bit of a sociopath but it was never really developed. Moisse broke into her home to scare her into buying an alarm. Her friends letting the dog out by accident making her lose another thing she loved.

It was a perfect storm of crazy and she had a pyschotic break.

Thanks very much for the explanation. Everything seems to fit into place now.

This was an excellent mystery story but with a twisted ending.

I can't believe the author thinks that Mollie should be punished with that psychotic break just because she got the house in an underhanded way.

That's it! I couldn't figure out why he wanted to have sex with her at weird times and why he looked so creepy. I rewatched and it's definitely each time she was shaken up.

That's a nice run-down of it, apple325.

There was a lot of stuff going on. People all had their own agendas. Each thing added to her already traumatized mind, and boop! You get a breakdown. (Also interesting how she ends up becoming the one who commits almost the same crime that took her father from her. Like a self-fulfilling loop. Poor girl.)

Hey Apple,

Watched the movie yesterday, and everything you said makes sense RXCEPT the part about Mal breaking in the first time. What I mean is, it makes sense that he MIGHT have done it, but do we know for sure that he DID it? Please clue me in on how we were supposed to get that, I missed it.

Well, I just saw it, and all I can say is, this movie was weird! LOL The explanations in this thread make sense, but how did they come up with them? All I could think of was, huh? And I'm not too fond of Aidan Turner in death scenes. 😠 What were they thinking?

reply

No, I don't believe that Mal was the one who broke in the first time. Because up until that point, all he'd done for her was paint. He didn't know yet how turned on she'd have gotten from anything because they hadn't gotten physical with each other yet. It was only after the break in that she jumped his fine bones lol. Mal was just a hot blooded, horn dog with a huge sexual appetite so he wanted it all day, every day. But I do wish they had made things more clear as to the events. Who did break in the first and third times?? I'm thinking it was the guy who originally wanted the house trying to scare her away. He assaulted Mal in the dark and I believe he also assaulted the realtor for screwing him out of the house. It was definitely Mossie that broke in the second time in order to scare her into buying his alarm system. As far as the alarm going off, they were always shown sleeping when it did, so Mal couldn't have hit the panic button. He said Mossie fixed it after the first time but Mossie told his brother he didn't because his brother was ribbing him about his malfunctioning alarm. So Mossie was probably fibbing to his brother about not going to fix it. The old guy definitely let the dog out. Mal definitely switched the Christmas party invitations in order to turn the neighbors off to coming over so he could have Molly all to himself. The guy coming to look at the house was definitely the original buyer. Molly stopped her psych meds cold turkey triggering her PTSD to get worse and worse until she had a complete mental breakdown. So most of the events did appear to all be unrelated. I also believe that Mal was a good, caring, loving guy with no ill intentions towards anybody. Usually in movies where the partner turns out to be the baddie, in scenes where they are embracing their significant other, they almost always have a poker face to the audience. So that way you have no idea if they are feeling love or malice towards their lover. But here, whenever Mal embraced Molly where only the audience saw his face, his expression was always full of caring and love. They definitely needed to make the events of the movie more clear though. It's just too confusing for the audience in the end. It would've brought the movie up in the ratings department if they were more clear because it is a good psychological Hitchcockian thriller.

I got confused myself, but it was like one of the original endings of Paranormal Activity: was she crazy, or was it true?

The note seemed to point to some conspiracy, but I like how the movie kept it open, but it did leave it a bit too vague. I wished for another scene making it clear if it was her being crazy or a Rosemary's Baby type conspiracy. I also thought of Let's Scare Jessica to Death.

I'm caught in the space between the concept and the execution
