Kristen Bell

Kristen is a talented comedy actress and i'm sure a competent singer, drama actress.

BUT

She is at best only pretty average looking,

SO

did any other viewers feel that rush of blood watching her gyrating in her skimpy costumes or was just me?

Maybe all the Burlesque sequences will be placed in full on the DVD, without the drama

reply

blood rushing - yes!
"average looking" - no!

I thought the fact that she was playing a villianous type character was dreadful...she came off very poorly playing a bitch.

...she came off very poorly playing a bitch.
Or maybe you simply had a different expectation from the character because she was "supposed to be the bitch"? You know, the typical "bitch" in movies like this: always the overly powerful antagonist, almost always 90% successful in making the main character's life miserable until the last 5 minutes of the movie, etc. etc.

I think they deliberately downplayed the "bitch" part a bit, just to stray away from the cliche. I also noticed that none of the other performers were bitches; very different from what we usually see in movies like this.

reply

True, I can see your point. I guess ultimately I would've liked the character more defined...I think she had a drinking problem as well and that was never really brought out, ya know?

Dammit Carol Sue, where is the vodka?!

reply

Did you??

I thought her drinking was brought up almost excessively. Almost every other scene with her was Tess telling her she was drunk, that she shouldn't be drinking or merely drinking up her shots. I'm not complaining, I'm only saying it was addressed rather strongly: I wouldn't say it was only implied or "never really brought out"... Quite the contrary, given her character was near irrelevant since she stopped making trouble after her prank with the music backfired.

The filmmakers made two mistakes with Kristen Bell as Nikki.

1) Show don't tell – Rather than have so many scenes where we are told she is a drunk, show us she is a drunk.

2) Underused actress – Bell is great and if given a chance she could have done more as either A) a tragic drunk, or B) an evil bitch. As it was, she was underused and her character underdeveloped.

As a result, the film had no real antagonist.

reply

I didn't get the big deal about Nikki in this film. Granted perhaps that is more the editors and directors fault than hers. But I honestly thought she wasn't worthy to be the star of the show like she was portrayed as being.

Lois Lane=Leia Lane

reply

That's more of the show don't tell problem. There needed to be a scene where we really get to see Nikki perform, rather than just being told she was a star.

The film would be better if we saw Nikki fall as the main character rose, but all we get is the main characters rise, with no fleshed out antagonist.

reply

I agree with you. I liked what she did, downplayed it and came of real, in a movie which wasn't exactly ringing the "real" bell all that hard. I enjoyed the movie anyway...Ann

I love K-Bell! Pretty much an outstanding actress in whatever role she plays, and she played the bitch role very well in this excellent movie. I'm a guy and I'm straight--I guess we can like flicks like these too.

I think Kristen was wrongly cast for this role. I just didn't think she was the dancing type....idk, she just did not fit. Normally I love her.

Ryan: Sometimes I think you talk just to make sounds.

reply

Same here. I normally like her, but I thought this was akward. A really weird casting choice.

She obviously has a worse manager then Alan Cumming does. Alan had about 10 lines and a broken up musical number while Kristen was second supporting actress. Yet Kristen Bell gets an "and also" credit while Mr. Cumming gets listed fourth in the opening credits. WTH?

p.s. - Kristen Bell is fricken MAGMA man.

In real Burlesque she would have never made it, too short. The dancers were always tall or "statuesque" as it is phrased.

Though short, she does have a great body, well proportioned, and her acting was very good. As I watched I found myself saying, "what a bitch!" So she did good.

Now when I watch the movie I just watch the numbers and fast forward through the story, I love the songs. Many truly old tunes, or at least had they had the sound of typical Burlesque. Hats off to the music and choreography, I loved it.
