Just NOT that funny

Before you start calling me boring and telling me that I am uptight and have no sense of humor, let me just say that I was not offended by The Hangover. I've noticed that a lot of negative comments talk about how lousy it was because it was disgusting and offensive. That's not what I am saying. I did think that some things in it were really funny, and there was a lot that I liked. Still, though, it's not nearly as funny as everyone says it is. Throwing a condom at someone's face isn't inherently funny, and neither is putting a baby's hand on its penis. Also, the gay-chinese-mob guy just didn't make me laugh. It was over the top and not funny. An example of a good, raunchy comedy starring three guys is Horrible Bosses. THAT movie was hilarious all the way through. Anyone else agree about The Hangover?

I think another raunchy comedy from the '80s about grown men in crazy scenarios was much better....'Bachelor Party' starring Tom Hanks!

Maybe you need to relate to the film to find it funny. Personally, it reminded me of the stuff I did in my early 20's and while it was over the top I found it absolutely hilarious because of what I was like back then. It was the same for my mates. The whole waking up the next morning and trying to back-track what happened the night before was a regular thing, and this film did it in such an original way. Though I guess if you didn't live that kind of lifestyle at all you may not get it. I don't think it's any different to a show like Sex and City, if you're a woman who lives that kind of lifestyle it's probably hilarious, but for everyone else it isn't.

In regards to Horrible Bosses, I thought that was just plain dreadful, humour is just a personal thing.

I'm writing this signature in bold so people know it's a signature

Totally agree. I didn't think The Hangover was as funny as people say it is. And yes Horrible Bosses was funnier than The Hangover. I'm glad someone is in the same boat as me here!

What happened to subtlety? Everything has to be outright raunchy humor, except Martin McDonagh or Edgar Wright, who's films do bad at the box office, and probably some other directors.

I agree with you, but only to a partial extent, in that I think The Hangover is not necessarily hilarious (although it is funny).

What makes it good is that it's entertaining (more entertaining than funny) because it's fun to watch them try and solve this mystery of what the hell happened in the past 24 hours by chasing leads and finding clues. It's just a really good movie that also happens to be funny. It doesn't have to be hilarious to be good.

This movie is more entertaining than hardcore hilarious.

I really didnt find this funny either.

I too was dumbfounded by the praise this movie received.

Here is a list of some of the gags in this movie:

A kid flicking off Alan.

Alan insinuating that he's a child-sex offender.

Pop culture references to Indiana Jones wearing a satchel (Ok I found that one funny), associating asians with Godzilla (wow, how original), and saying that Dustin Hoffman was a retard in Rain Man.

People being tasered.

Making a baby jerk itself off.

That's all the jokes in this movie revolve around. There is no depth or context to the humour, they are just non-sequiturs and are the equivalent of fart jokes. Like a string of skits that are thinly connected by a half-assed story. Need I say more? There is nothing remotely clever about this movie. I love raunchy comedies, like Bad Santa, 40 Year Old Virgin, or Borat. But The Hangover was weak.

Well, Hangover did 10 times the box office that Bridesmaids did so I think that says something about how many people would agree with you. My guess is Hangover could be called a guy's movie (with comedic actors that played off each other incredibly well) and something like Bridesmaids would be called a chick flick. Naturally you would not find it as funny (especially the buffoonery) if you happen to be a female. But even Shakespeare had bawdiness in his comedies.
