Why do Americans never really discuss the prison system ?

I hear the prison system discussed most often when a pedophile or
child murderer, or mass murderer is convicted of their crime.

Then we hear people say stuff like how the other convicts are so good
that they will punish, cripple or kill a "real" criminal, because as we all
know those hardened criminals in prison are such upstanding morally
upright people who just want to see justice.

When I first saw documentaries on the prisons in Scandinavia and northern
Europe for the most part where they treat the prisoners like human
beings that need to be separated from society, I thought I was hallucinating.
Now I think that is a good idea.

There is something about the American prison system that gets everything
wrong, and ends up creating criminals far worse when they get out than
when they go in, mostly because they are treated like animals in and
tortured - and let them torture each other.

Prison should not be for torturing someone - that is a crime - even if they
are bad or criminal, or insane people.

There are some who deserve the death penalty - like Anders Brevik who
killed 77 people. This guy:

SKIEN, Norway (AP) — Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian far-right fanatic who killed 77 people in bomb-and-gun massacres in 2011, argued Tuesday for an early release from prison, telling a parole judge he had renounced violence even as he professed white supremacist views and flashed Nazi salutes.

He needs to be ended in my opinion, and anyone else of his caliber. No pun intended.
