Rip off of Mad Men

How is this not a complete rip off of AMC's Mad Men? Sure it's not set in the 1960's, but they are pretty much about the same thing: An ad agency in a big city where people deal with moral issues and what makes people happy. Can't we just have Mad Men?

reply

right, like we don't have 5 CSI shows or like 30 shows about Lawyers. Give i a chance.

"How is this not a complete rip off of AMC's Mad Men?"

Because it's nothing like it beyond being set at an ad agency.

This is silly. Whenever something comes out with one remote similarity, there's always a comparison and cries of rip-off no matter how absurd they get.

First it was Heroes and The Nine and Jericho, ripping off Lost because they're all ensembles and two are serials despite not being anything alike. Then we have people calling now-cancelled Journeyman a rip-off over the 10 years+ old show Quantum Leap because a guy time travels in both. And then we have people calling The Mentalist a rip-off of Psych simply because it features a phony psychic in both-and that psychic is retired in the former! (I can't belive that a person wrote a letter to E Weekly admitting that he hasn't seen The Mentalist crying rip-off). And now Trust Me is ripping off Mad Men because it's set at an ad agency (I wonder if you complain about the millions of cop, doctor and lawyer shows out there) and is set ina city (where else will major ad agency be located at?) and people deal with moral issues and what makes them happy (don't ALL shows perform this vague plot?)

And you are usually the one saying it.

I swear to god I did not follow you here from OB.

Anyway so you've seen the show? How is it? This and United States of Tara are the only new shows I'm interested as of now.

Which show? Trust Me?

I really like the characters a lot but it is too fast paced. I'll keep watching though. I really enjoy the characters and the cast playing them and it's very informative about the ad industry.

People say The Mentalist is a Psych rip-off because the show literally markets itself as (verbatim) "People think I'm psychic, but really I'm just observant." And then he solves crimes. Maybe the show should have marketed itself differently if it didn't want the comparisons.

how is this a rip off? just because they both deal with advertising? this has more of a comedic tone to it. its like saying that scrubs is a rip off of e.r or any of those medical shows. i've been watching mad men since it started and this show is no way ripping off that show.

wait, i just realised that bewitched dealt with advertising too. mad men ripped them off too. lol

Not even remotely the same in content, tone, or pacing. Nevermind that Mad Men is period piece set in New York and Trust Me is set in prest-day Chicago. What, you just read this was set in an ad agency and decided to pipe in with a trollish "rip off" post?

So what? Mad Men is just another Bosom Buddies rip off! Seriously though, there's already been about a billion ad agency TV shows. Mad Men is great, but it's not the first one to put marketing firms on the small screen. Not by a long shot.

reply

And Life on mars (the original) clearly rips off NYPD Blue: they're both about policemen!

reply

EXACTLY!

reply

it is definitely not so booooring like Mad Men, so if it is a rip-off it is better than "original"

reply

I love Mad Men - have the 1st season on dvd - but other than it being set in an ad agency - there is nothing similar.

I think Mad Men focuses much more on relationships and issues of the times than Trust Me does and I feel Trust Me has more emphasis on the competitiveness of the field in the current time period

I fail to see anything else to draw a conclusion that anyone or anything is being ripped off
