This movie was released in 2009 and is clearly set in that era, well into the digital age with mobile phones, DVDs and online ticket bookings etc. Yet in contrast, Leonard uses a 1960’s (Nikon F) camera and 35mm B&W film for his photography. I’m wondering why the producers chose to include this. I’m certain it was no simple oversight or mistake. Was this choice of unusual kit employed to emphasise or accentuate some sort of ‘weirdness’ in Leonard’s character?

He takes B&W pics. Perhaps this camera is best suited for that.
Lenses are still available, so his photography options are nearly limitless.

I think it must have been passed down from his father. It certainly would not have been bought because it was cheap. The Nikon F was very collectible by then (and still is) and would have been quite an expensive entry point into photography. All of the Nikon lenses were equally suited to colour or B&W film so that is not a factor.
